Job Description

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the plant manager in maintaining safety, security, cleanliness, and appearance of the entire school plant; assume full responsibility when the Head Custodian is absent.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Open building in the morning; secure it in the afternoon.
  • Operate heating and air conditioning systems in the absence of an engineer.
  • Ensure rooms are properly ventilated.
  • Replace light globes or fluorescent tubes.
  • Receive supplies, check inventory, and request janitorial supplies for custodial staff, cafeteria, and stadium.
  • Report vandalism immediately to the principal and keep records.
  • Report daily to the principal on the condition of the school.
  • Check fire‑fighting equipment and playground equipment for safety and proper functioning.
  • Repair, remove, or secure any unsafe equipment and report findings to the principal.
  • CUT and maintain the school yard, shrubs, and watering schedule.
  • Remove trash and debris from premises.
  • Buff floors when appropriate.
  • Maintain cleanliness of halls and entrances during the day.
  • Check boys’ dressing rooms during the day.
  • Clean classroom units as specified by work schedule and school needs.
  • Raise and lower the flag.
  • Be available for school and school‑sponsored activities. Outside agencies pay for use of the building as prescribed in policy manual.
  • Set up for assemblies, conferences, plays, and programs when required.
  • Supervise custodial staff, inspect their work, assign duties, keep time records, and report to the principal.
  • Perform light maintenance functions such as replacing faucet handles, light switches, door knobs, door adjustments, glass repairs, and painting for all buildings on the school plant.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Plant Manager.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/HOURS WORKED:

  • All weather conditions, winter and summer.
  • Employee is expected to provide and wear appropriate clothing for the day’s conditions.
  • Work day consists of eight hours per day with a half‑hour lunch break.
  • Occasional overtime, after‑hours, Saturday and Sunday work.
  • Plant managers and custodial personnel may be required to work a split shift.

COMMUNICATION

SKILLS:

  • Read and comprehend service orders and repair request documents; write job completion information.
  • Use basic math skills to review purchase receipts and time‑keeping information.

EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Electric and/or air‑driven power tools (saws, drill motors, table tools, etc.).
  • Electric buffers, strippers, mop, push broom, power lawn equipment, riding mower, gas weed trimmer, edger rake, etc.

PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:

  • Regular walking and carrying of tools, equipment, and building materials.
  • Work surface variations: mud, gravel, concrete, dirt, grass.
  • Climb 6, 8, 10, and 12‑foot step ladders, extension ladders, stairs, and scaffolding routinely.
  • Lift and carry equipment daily; maximum one‑person load of 50 pounds.
  • Occasional two‑person coordinated lifting.

MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:

  • Schedule, plan, and coordinate multiple job tasks.
  • Interface with all levels of administrators.
  • Interface with contractors, assign and monitor work.
  • Comprehend and produce written instructions.

HUMAN RELATIONS INVOLVEMENT:

  • Resolve personnel disputes with fairness, maintaining the best interest of JPPSS.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Effective reading, writing, and comprehension of operating equipment instructions and chemical use.
