Position
Purpose:
Position performs a variety of duties in and around the buildings of the Hospital complex in an effort to maintain Plant Operations 24/7. Duties include repairs, monitoring and reporting problems with machinery, systems and mechanical equipment, heating, ventilation equipment, air conditioning, refrigeration systems, kitchen equipment, Building Management Systems, and Fire Alarm Systems. Professionally and safely operates the boilers, compressors, which provides for utilities such as light, heat and power.
Position must be able to make independent and timely decisions on all Shifts. Responds to off shift Engineering calls. Performs relief work on assigned fluctuating work hours on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd shift, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
- Assists in operating and maintaining all Hospital mechanical systems and equipment. Performs basic repairs of the facilities mechanical and electrical spaces, exterior and various interior areas to ensure function. Must be alert to potential hazards or breakdowns and report such conditions to supervisor.
- Responsible for the safe, efficient operation of the high pressure steam boilers, auxiliary equipment and centrifugal chillers and water towers to provide continuous supply of steam or chilled water for the hospital.

- Contributes to the effective operations of the hospital by demonstrating dependability in job performance.
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in the operation and repair of high pressure steam boilers and auxiliary equipment. Healthcare facility setting experience is preferred.
- Level I requires OE-2 Operating Stationary Engineer License. Level II requires State of Connecticut Heating/Piping/Cooling License (S-2, OE-2, E, P)
- Work requires the ability to understand and respond to simple written or verbal instructions.
- Requires the ability to read and write English.
- Position requires ability to constantly lift/push/pull objects more than 100 pounds; perform difficult manipulative and arm-hand coordination skills; walk, stand, sit and remain in uncomfortable periods for prolonged periods; discriminate colors and hear normal sounds with some background noises. Position requires ability to concentrate on fine detail with constant interruption and attend to tasks for more than 50 minutes at a time.
Individual must be able to understand and relate to theories behind several related concepts and remember multiple tasks given over long periods of time and be able to communicate in written word using checklists on simple sentences. - Employee may constantly be exposed to hazardous materials such as chemicals, blood, body tissues, fluids, high temperatures, low temperatures, sudden fluctuation in temperatures, seasonal conditions in outside weather, grease, oil, toxins, cytoxins, poisonous substances, dust, bodily injuries, loud or unpleasant noises, high humidity, wetness, electrical hazards, and burns. Moderate stress encountered in emergency situations.
