Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Position Summary
Oversees and performs preventative maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting for fleet and plant equipment at the Power Plant in Sutherland. Performs multiple tasks and fills in as directed or as needed while maintaining a high degree of attention to detail. Abides by the Company Safety Program and Policies while performing duties safely. Reliable attendance is required.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Implements and maintains a preventative maintenance program to anticipate, check, lubricate, and record all fleet and plant equipment.
- Oversees, delegates, and/or performs scheduled maintenance on all equipment safely, completing maintenance and repair logs.
- Oversees, delegates, and/or performs basic repair, service, and related work on all production equipment including but not limited to loaders, graders, trucks, trailers, conveyors, car movers and dust‑collecting equipment.
- Operates equipment safely such as trucks, blades, loaders, conveyors, car movers, torches and welders.
- Uses various hand tools and test equipment periodically to analyze, evaluate, and correct malfunctions with various systems, devices, and instruments; ensures small power tools are in proper working order.
- Informs Plant Operations Foreman and other personnel as needed of potential problems, status, and timeline of projects; assures work is completed timely and safely, and supports other departments as directed.
- Keeps inventory and reports to appropriate personnel of parts and supplies needed for repairs and maintenance of fleet and equipment.
- Keeps a well‑maintained shop.
- Provides guidance and training to other related personnel as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
- One (1) year of mechanical experience performing maintenance and repairs on vehicles or equipment, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Valid Driver’s License and be insurable under the company insurance program.
Qualifications- Must pass a background check, pre‑employment physical with drug testing, and background screening.
- Requires good physical skills to perform the overall requirements of the job.
- Must be able to work normal day hours, generally between 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., averaging 40 to 50 hours a week, and may be required to work occasional Saturdays and Sundays to load market trucks or dispose of ash.
- Must have basic equipment maintenance and repair experience.
- Ability to oversee and train other personnel.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50–75 pounds.
Skills and Abilities
- Can work independently and has a good sense of detail to maintain a clean and safe environment.
- Can distinguish between safe and unsafe conditions.
- Can delegate tasks to others and work well in a team environment.
- Can read and comprehend documents related to the job, such as scale tickets, SDS sheets, equipment manuals, and the company safety manual.
- Can take and understand work direction.
- Understands basic numbers and math to count inventory or complete orders based on order tickets; can apply common sense in carrying out simple one‑ or two‑step instructions.
- Basic computer skills are required.
Candidate must meet the above qualifications, task frequency, and PPE requirements. Approval of pre‑employment reference and background checks, and post‑offer drug/alcohol testing with background screening (if required) are conditions of employment.
