Duties Summary

Responsible for supervising the work of Bridge Maintenance Workers in performing general and hazardous maintenance work in the repair and continuous upkeep of structural steel, reinforced concrete and timber highway bridges and similar structures at heights and underwater; supervising the repair and maintenance of buildings; and performing other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
  • Legal Authorization to Work: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State to be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
  • Experience and Training: Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in construction and maintenance work, of which three (3) years shall have been in bridge maintenance and repair work and of the three years, one year shall have been in a supervisory capacity; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Knowledge of: Practices, methods, materials and tools used in bridge inspection and maintenance work; steel welding and cutting equipment and its use; mixing and applying different types of paints to steel, concrete and wooden surfaces and methods and materials used to prepare such surfaces for painting; techniques of rigging, scaffolds, and other such equipment; hazards and safety precautions necessary in bridge maintenance work;

    principles and practices of supervision.
  • Ability to: Plan, lay out, assign and review the work of Bridge Maintenance Workers; inspect bridges to determine repairs needed and make cost estimates for making such repairs; prepare comprehensive maintenance reports and maintenance budgets.
  • Physical and Medical Requirements: Applicants must be able to perform the essential functions of the position effectively and safely, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Drivers' License Requirement: Applicants must possess a valid license to drive in the State of Hawaii, at the time of appointment.
