JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Eighth grade education. High school diploma or GED preferred.

Certification or Licensure: None required

Skills: Knowledge of the methods, materials, and practices of building and grounds work; ability to operate and maintain custodial and grounds care equipment; including auto scrubbers, burnish machine, uses personal protective equipment and other safety tools and practices; monitors building spaces and grounds to ensure a safe and secure environment; possesses a basic knowledge of emergency response procedures. Must be consistently professional and ethical, and respect the values of confidentiality and integrity.

Willing to take and follow directions. Good organizational skills, delegation skills, and motivational skills. Works cooperatively with others, and maintains effective working relationships with employees and the public. Must possess knowledge of occupational safety and health regulations and a solid understanding of the utilization and care of materials and equipment used in performance of responsibilities.

Work Experience: Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience that provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.

PRIMARY DUTY: This position is responsible for performing manual tasks related to general housekeeping, sanitation, and appearance of the school plant. Under general supervision, performs building cleaning and facilities maintenance work in schools and administrative buildings. The work involves varied building cleaning duties and related facilities and grounds maintenance activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Has a positive attitude toward job and customer service. Dresses appropriately for a school setting.
  • Cleans and maintains a variety of surfaces such as ceilings, chalkboards, counters, tables, lockers, etc.
  • Complies with all regulatory mandates.
  • Works independently, organizes, and uses time effectively. Can work effectively with frequent interruptions and adapt to changing circumstances; shows initiative.
  • Assists school staff by making deliveries to classrooms, moving furniture and other heavy objects between rooms, and performing other manual or strenuous tasks.
  • Responsible for the overall condition of the building and grounds.
  • Safely works with cleaning chemicals and refuse in compliance with all required regulations.
  • Orders and maintains building supplies and manages supply budget.
  • Operates power mower to cut lawns and cleans up rubbish from grounds and adjacent areas.
  • Operates all cleaning equipment to include basic tools for maintenance such as ladders and tools.
  • Dusts, sweeps, mops, vacuums, scrubs, buffs, and cleans floors, carpets, hallways, classrooms, locker rooms, gymnasiums, cafeterias, large group rooms, and office spaces.
  • Cleans and washes walls, light fixtures, blinds, windows, restrooms, clinic, water fountains, and vacuums hallways. Replaces light bulbs.
  • Responsible for appropriately opening and/or closing buildings according to district protocols.
  • Works within the procedures and systems in the school community.
  • The employee shall carry out such other and further duties, whether specifically listed above or not, as are assigned or required by the employee’s supervisor, other appropriate school personnel, law, board policy, administrative regulation, department handbook, as are reasonably necessary to the efficient operation of the school system and its mission.
