Primary Duty

This position is responsible for performing manual tasks concerning general housekeeping, sanitation, and appearance of the school plant. Under general supervision, performs building cleaning and facilities maintenance work in schools and administrative buildings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Positive attitude toward job and customer service; dresses appropriately for a school setting.
  • Cleans and maintains various surfaces such as ceilings, chalkboards, counters, tables, lockers, etc.
  • Comply with all regulatory mandates.
  • Work independently, organize, and use time effectively. Can work with frequent interruptions and adapt to changing circumstances, showing initiative.
  • Assist school staff by making deliveries to classrooms, moving furniture and other heavy objects between rooms, and performing other manual or strenuous tasks.
  • Responsible for the overall condition of the building and grounds.
  • Safely work with cleaning chemicals and refuse in compliance with all required regulations.
  • Order and maintain building supplies and supply budget.
  • Operate power mower in cutting lawns and clearing rubbish from grounds and adjacent areas.
  • Operate all cleaning equipment, including basic tools such as ladders, tools, etc.
  • Dust, sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, buff, and clean floors, carpets, hallways, classrooms, locker rooms, gymnasiums, cafeterias, large group rooms, and office space.
  • Cleans and washes walls, light fixtures, blinds, windows, restrooms, clinic, water fountains, and vacuums hallways; replaces light bulbs.
  • Responsible for appropriately opening and/or closing buildings according to district protocols; works within procedures and systems in the school community.
  • The employee shall carry out such other and further duties, whether specifically listed above or not, as assigned or required by the employee’s supervisor, other appropriate school personnel, law, board policy, administrative regulation, department handbook, as reasonably necessary to efficiently operate the school system and its mission.
Work Environment / Physical Demands

The work environment is representative of those encountered while performing essential functions. Noise level is usually moderate. The employee may need to lift or move up to 25 pounds, talk and hear, walk, stand, and sit regularly.

Special Requirements
  • Occasional overtime or night work required.
  • Requires sufficient physical strength and ability to lift and move heavy objects (minimum 50 lbs.) and perform manual labor.
  • Work is repetitive and may involve sustained physical effort, heavy lifting or moving, with exposure to accident and injury hazards, and unpleasant elements.
  • Employees with appropriate certificates may be assigned responsibility for checking or operating heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning equipment.
