Position: Custodian/Bus Driver-10 Months at SSHS (26-27 SY)

Custodian

Under general supervision, performs a variety of general custodial and light groundskeeping work in the care and maintenance of assigned school buildings and other school system facilities. Work involves sweeping, mopping, and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors; washing walls, woodwork, and fixtures; and policing buildings to empty trash and pick up debris, etc. Reports to the school principal or assigned supervisor.

Essential job functions include performing minor or routine maintenance on appliances and equipment, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, shampooing, stripping, waxing, and buffing floor surfaces; cleaning restroom areas and replenishing paper supplies, hand soap, and hand sanitizer as necessary; cleaning windows, walls, woodwork, blinds, and light fixtures; dusting and cleaning desks and other furniture; emptying trash receptacles; depositing recyclable material in proper containers;

inspecting heating systems; patrolling buildings to inspect for safety or maintenance problems; sweeping sidewalks and walkways outside of buildings; policing grounds, picking up debris; shoveling snow and/or applying de-icing compounds to walkways and driveways; disinfecting high-touch and widespread areas; opening and/or securing buildings at start and end of work day, respectively; turning on and off lights at start and end of day, respectively;

adjusting heating or air conditioning as appropriate; arranging furniture for meetings or other events; lifting and/or moving furniture, equipment, and supplies; working at special school events as required; and performing other related functions as directed by the supervisor.

Minimum training and experience includes graduation from high school and two years of experience in custodial work, or a combination of education, training, and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job functions.

Minimum qualifications or standards required to perform essential job functions include physical ability to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, buffers, brooms, mops, small hand tools, etc.; ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; ability to perform work involving physical strength for extended periods of time;

ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information; ability to read simple forms; ability to prepare time sheets and supply requisitions using the prescribed format; ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form; ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions; ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape;

ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using custodial equipment; ability to handle a variety of items such as custodial equipment; ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions; and ability to adapt to performing under minimal levels of stress.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include general knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in custodial work; general knowledge of safety precautions and warning signals regarding school building equipment; general understanding of the proper procedures for handling hazardous wastes and hazardous substances; some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials; ability to follow a written schedule; ability to follow instructions;

ability to perform medium to heavy physical work; ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing assignments; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Bus Driver

Under general supervision, work performed includes driving the bus safely to the destination and return; following school district procedures when driving assigned bus routes; and monitoring students' behavior while they are riding on the bus.

Essential job functions include driving the bus safely to the destination and returns; conforming to traffic rules and regulations; making vehicle pre-checks and recording and reporting malfunctions; following school district regulations for handling vehicle breakdowns and accident incidents; keeping the bus clean; picking up and dropping off students at designated times and bus stops; ensuring students depart the bus at their usual stops;

determining that all students leave the bus at both ends of the route; taking suitable action to resolve incidents between/among students should such incidents occur; and reporting inappropriate student behavior to school authorities as soon as possible.

Minimum training and experience includes graduation from high school, five years of responsible driving experience, completion of the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles Bus Driver Training Course, ability to pass the…
