Position: Telemetry Technician I or II - Hickory, NC (NGBU Employees Only)

Only employees currently within the Natural Gas Business Unit (NGBU) will be considered for this position. The selected candidate must live within 40 miles or 45 minutes from the Hickory Ops Center. Depending on qualifications, the hiring manager may fill the position at level I or level II.

This position is responsible for all duties associated with safe, efficient, and cost‑effective installation and maintenance of natural gas facilities and appurtenances on both transmission and distribution natural gas systems per 49

CFR Part 192, Piedmont Natural Gas policies and procedures, and local/state regulations.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Perform work assignments on customer’s premises.
  • Interact with customers in a professional, respectful, and courteous manner to promote good customer relations; answer customer‑related inquiries regarding established company policies and procedures and provide explanation of work performed.
  • Utilize and become proficient in technology devices such as computer, smartphone, etc. for work assignments and accurately record required information.
  • Utilize tools such as maps and GPS to locate work assignments; drive a company vehicle; fleet assignments vary by location and generally include a requirement to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) medical card within 6 months of entering the position and maintain it consistently thereafter.
  • Install, repair, proof test, and maintain Group IV meter sets (including large diaphragm, rotary, turbine, and any new meters chosen for use), and associated regulators and reliefs.
  • Install, repair and maintain electronic cor rectors.
  • Install, repair and maintain Large Volume Remote Meter Reading devices and related components.
  • Coordinate with districts in setting meters and cor rectors for large volume customers.
  • Check customer regulators and relief valves during field meter testing.
  • Troubleshoot, identify, and correct any large volume meter reading issues.
  • Ensure completion of meter test program on Group IV meters.
  • Ensure accuracy of AMR devices on meters and cor rectors.
  • Support the company’s odorization requirements by taking and entering system odorant readings.
  • General maintenance including painting and labeling of facilities, weed control, and other activities as determined by the supervisor or management.
  • Install, inspect, test, and maintain pressure control equipment at regulator stations, including related devices and components; natural gas heaters at pipeline facilities, and valves at regulator stations.
  • Assist in the installation and maintenance of pressure control equipment at combustion turbine power generation plants.
  • Install, inspect, test, and maintain field SCADA system equipment such as Electronic Pressure Recorders (ERX’s) and related devices and components, communication circuits, modems, radio and wireless devices.
  • Assist with inspection and maintenance of ultrasonic meters.
  • Support Engineering department and Resource Centers on pipeline construction and in‑line inspection routines and emergency response.
  • Execute scheduled gas measurement equipment inspections, tests, calibrations, and maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of 2 years of technical school education and/or an associate’s degree or equivalent job‑related experience.
  • Minimum six months of training or experience in electronics and/or mechanical systems with demonstrated experience in installation, diagnostics, and troubleshooting of electronic and mechanical systems and equipment.
  • Experience utilizing mechanical concepts and mathematical aptitude.
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in the natural gas industry or a related technical field.
  • Experience utilizing Microsoft Office products.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain CDL medical card within 6 months of entering the position.
  • Experience using construction tools.
  • Experience utilizing personal computers in a Windows environment.
  • Demonstrated safety awareness.
