Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Position Summary
Responsible for performing preventative maintenance, special inspections, and general repairs on tractor and trailer units in accordance with DOT, federal, state regulations, and company standards.
Duties and Responsibilities- Diagnose and repair tractor and trailer units.
- Perform annual and systematic 90‑day inspections to ensure equipment meets federal FHWA standards.
- Inspect cargo tanks (internal, external, upper coupler), heat system, leakage, vacuum, pressure, and vapor‑tightness (EPA Method 27).
- Determine overall mechanical condition, diagnose component malfunctions, and initiate repair actions.
- Repair components by replacing worn or damaged parts with new or reconditioned parts.
- Correct vehicle deficiencies by removing, repairing, adjusting, overhauling, assembling, disassembling, and replacing major assemblies, sub‑assemblies, components, parts, or systems (brakes, hubs, bearings, seals, electrical, HVAC, fuel, steering, hydraulics, control linkages, clutches, traction units).
- Use technical publications or automated systems to maintain vehicles according to manufacturer’s schedules and for parts research.
- Accurately annotate all maintenance and labor performed in maintenance management software.
- Operate a yard hostler truck to move trailers within the facility yard and shop as needed.
- Communicate the need to order and receive parts and supplies.
- Adhere to all established safety (OSHA) and environmental policies, including handling or disposal of hazardous wastes.
- Clean, organize, and maintain the work environment to ensure equipment longevity and workplace safety.
- Perform welding repairs as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Report directly to the Shop Supervisor.
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Experience in the use of inspection and test equipment used for cargo tank inspections.
- Demonstrated knowledge of vehicle and equipment theory, principles, and repair related to diesel engines, air, electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
- Ability to inspect tanks and trailers to align with DOT standards (49
CFR HM180.407). - Knowledge of tractor and trailer maintenance, DOT rules and regulations, company policies and procedures.
- Proficient in reading, writing, and speaking English.
Use arms to reach and stretch; hands and fingers to grasp, move, or assemble objects; leans, kneels, crouches, and sits as required. Stand for long periods and maneuver through shop environment, carrying or relocating objects weighing up to 75 lbs. Perform broad and fine locomotive motions, maintain postures and stances to accommodate rapid and gradual changes. Visually identify and focus on objects at close and distant ranges, and at central and peripheral locations.
Use auditory senses to hear and isolate specific sounds and recognize differences in varying sound levels. Speak clearly and at necessary volumes. Maintain a constant state of alertness and safe manner. Work may involve exposure to loud machinery, air tools, hammering, engine noise, confined spaces, and occasional climate variations. 0% travel under normal circumstances.
