Primary Function

To maintain, inspect, and repair the District's electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and other physical plant systems and to assist the Director of Operations in ensuring that District facilities operate safely, efficiently, and in accordance with Board of Education policies, administrative procedures, and applicable state requirements.

Essential Functions
Building Systems Inspection and Preventive Maintenance
  • Proactively inspects school buildings and mechanical systems to identify needed repairs while maintaining high standards of safety, cleanliness, and operational efficiency.
  • Inspects pumps and motors of varying horsepower and performs preventive maintenance or repairs as needed.
  • Inspects piping systems and repairs valves, air bleeds, pumps, seals, gaskets, and related components.
  • Changes belts on cooling towers, air handlers, compressors, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Assists with the replacement and maintenance of fixtures and equipment in classrooms, restrooms, offices, grounds, and other District areas.
  • Supports energy-efficiency initiatives involving technology and building systems and collaborates with staff toward applicable energy-efficiency certifications.
HVAC, Boiler, and Water Treatment Systems
  • Performs water-treatment maintenance for District cooling towers and chilled-water, hot-water, and steam-boiler systems using appropriate chemicals, tools, and methods.
  • Safely shuts down and starts up HVAC and boiler equipment.
  • Tests the operation of low-pressure steam boilers and performs required water treatment.
  • Monitors and corrects water and steam chemistry deficiencies.
Building Repairs and General Maintenance
  • Performs basic plumbing and electrical work using appropriate tools and electrical testing devices.
  • Performs basic carpentry, roof repair, and related building-maintenance work as assigned.
  • Performs basic electrical and shop duties and safely uses hand and power tools when completing projects.
  • Paints building interiors and exteriors as needed.
  • Assists school custodians and other support staff with the maintenance of school facilities and equipment, particularly during summer break.
Equipment, Vehicles, Grounds, and Material Movement
  • Operates snowplows, forklifts, boom lifts, scissor lifts, and other maintenance equipment and obtains and maintains required equipment certifications.
  • Performs snow removal and snowplowing duties as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with department personnel to maintain District vehicles, building-maintenance equipment, and cleaning equipment.
  • Moves furniture, equipment, and materials within buildings or between District locations as required for District activities.
  • Maintains a valid state-issued driver's license.
Safety and Emergency Response
  • Promotes the safety, health, and comfort of District students, employees, and visitors.
  • Travels to work sites throughout the District and remains available for evening or weekend work when necessary to respond to emergency needs.
  • Assists in maintaining timely, 24-hour communication regarding unusual building conditions, emergencies, or security breaches.
  • Performs all work in accordance with applicable safety requirements, Board of Education policies and procedures, and the Illinois School Code.
Documentation, Purchasing, and Project Support
  • Prepares and maintains detailed written records related to maintenance activities and completed work.
  • Recommends and coordinates the purchase of maintenance equipment, supplies, materials, and construction-related services.
  • Assists the Director of Operations with the coordination of maintenance projects and departmental activities.
