Job Summary
Under the direction of the Assistant Manager, Facilities, the Utility Plant Operator II performs journeyman-level work related to the operation, installation, inspection, modification, remodeling, and repair of boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, blowers, and all ancillary equipment and property associated with all Central Plant Utility Operations. This role collaborates across functions to champion the Tribe’s goals, mission, and values.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Oversee operation of cooling towers, blowers, chillers, Cogen system, boilers, and other plant equipment; ensure guest comfort through building automation systems; maintain daily logs and communicate work updates.
- Inspect and perform preventive maintenance covering mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and environmental systems; develop preventive maintenance instructions and assist in planning routine maintenance and shutdowns.
- Document all operating data, inspections, testing, maintenance (corrective and preventive), and repairs; update equipment documentation, specifications, and drawings as needed.
- Coordinate with HVAC and Electrical departments to locate and troubleshoot building system issues; partner with vendors and service providers for maintenance and repair; collaborate on new construction and retrofit projects with ISO standards and building codes.
- Respond to emergency situations, providing quick decision making and coordination with emergency services and internal teams to mitigate plant operating concerns and safety issues.
- Assist Central Plant Management in ensuring compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations, minimizing downtime, and coordinating with external vendors and contractors for specialized repairs.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support efficient department operation.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- At least five (5) years of facility maintenance experience, including progressive cogeneration operation, power plant, diesel generator, central chilled water plant, or central hydraulic/boiler plant operation.
- Trade school experience in HVAC or Electrical, or equivalent, required.
- Perform maintenance, operation, repair, calibration, installation, diagnosis, and inspection of industrial/commercial utility systems.
- Knowledge of Central Plant equipment and piping, including steam, chilled water, feed water, condensate, natural gas, oil, and water systems.
- Proficiency in water analysis, treatment chemicals, digital control energy management, and industrial heating/cooling control systems.
- Ability to use shop equipment, welding, and brazing tools.
- Strong communication skills, understanding of safety regulations, and hazard procedures.
- Capable of estimating project time, methods, and materials from construction documents, blueprints, plans, manuals, specifications, and diagrams.
- Basic literacy, arithmetic, and computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, CAD).
- Willingness to work weekends, holidays, overtime, emergency call‑backs, and flexible schedules.
- Possibly required to obtain and maintain a gaming license at the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission.
- Universal EPA Certificate preferred.
- Valid driver’s license required for operation of Tribe-owned vehicles.
- Work is primarily in a facility setting; may involve travel to meetings, trade shows, and conferences.
- Required to work evening, weekend, and holiday shifts; must handle physical demands such as lifting up to 40 pounds, stooping, kneeling, and repetitive motions.
- Must be able to perform tasks requiring visual and auditory acuity suitable for reading data, operating computers, and communicating in a fast-paced environment.
