Facility Maintenance Technician II
Join the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) team at the National Solar Observatory (NSO) and play a vital role in maintaining one of the world’s most advanced solar research facilities. As a facility maintenance technician you will support the cleanliness and upkeep of critical environments by performing cleanroom‑quality cleaning alongside standard janitorial tasks across the observatory and its ancillary spaces.
EssentialFunctions
- Perform cleaning tasks to keep the Observatory facility and equipment clean and operable, including specialized cleaning in machinery spaces and optical clean rooms, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, wiping, vacuuming building interiors.
- Sanitize equipment and surfaces, following procedures for chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
- Service and maintain common areas, gather, dispose of rubbish, and keep vehicle interiors/exteriors free of pests.
- Use vehicles, including vans and industrial trucks, to travel within the site and clean fleet vehicle interiors/exteriors.
- Inspect and prevent pests and invasive species in facility, vehicles, and storage yard, using appropriate PPE when distributing insecticides, pesticides, or fumigants.
- Notify managers of needed major repairs and work with senior technicians to request, inventory, and acquire supplies and equipment.
- Maintain accurate records of cleaning activities, timekeeping, inventory requests, and support senior technicians in weather‑related leak detection, filter inspection, furniture moving, and other maintenance duties.
- Ensure compliance with AURA property management policies, government award terms, and applicable safety standards, reporting unsafe conditions and practices.
- Assist in general maintenance of all structures and installations, including installation, repair, and maintenance of building components.
- Operate forklifts, scissor lifts, reach machines, and other equipment for cleaning, maintenance, and material handling.
- Perform other general maintenance activities as assigned.
- High school or vocational school graduation.
- Minimum one year of experience in an industrial environment or facility maintenance.
- Knowledge and ability to use general maintenance tools, materials, methods, and practices.
- Ability to work independently, follow directions, cooperate in a team, read and interpret blueprints, and use basic computer skills for tasking and record‑keeping.
- Good reading, writing, and speaking skills for documentation and communication.
- Physical ability to perform required tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds, and a valid state driver’s license (and ability to obtain a GSA license).
- Awareness of the cultural and biological significance of the site.
- Requires sitting, standing, walking, reaching, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds, with occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Requires close vision, depth perception, color discrimination, and ability to adjust focus.
- Requires sufficient mobility, dexterity, and auditory capacity to perform tasks without assistive aids.
- Requires working at heights with appropriate PPE, ability to work at 10,000’ elevation, occasional travel between mainland US and Hawaiian Islands.
- Shifts may include early mornings, nights, and weekends.
Salary range: $25.00 to $29.80 per hour. Benefits include paid time off, retirement plan contributions, and a competitive salary commensurate with experience.
