CEMML is a research, education, and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University. We apply the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense lands and public lands.

The project site is located in a unique area on Hawaii Island between Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai on Saddle road. With an elevation ranging from about 2500 feet to 8700 feet, the program manages for 26 threatened and endangered species and includes a portion of one of the last remaining sub‑alpine tropical dryland forest in the world.

Description:

Four hourly Wildlife Fencing Technician positions are available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). The work location is Pōhakuloa Training Area (PTA), on the Island of Hawaii (The Big Island). Temporary positions cannot exceed 9 months. Continuation of the position is dependent on continued funding from the sponsor for natural resource management at Pōhakuloa Training Area.

Duties: Construction and repair of ungulate exclusion fence units at PTA to protect threatened and endangered species. The work is very strenuous. The incumbents will work with other crew members to install and maintain four to six‑foot hogwire fence, clearing a fence corridor, installing t‑posts, anchors, and stretching fence; designed to keep ungulates out of designated conservation areas. Other duties include but are not limited to loading/unloading, hogwire and other fence materials, site prep, inspecting and repairing existing fences, and controlling vegetation near fences using hand and power tools and herbicides.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid U.S. state driver’s license.
  • High School Diploma, General Education Development (GED), or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of construction labor or experience installing and maintaining a four to six‑foot hogwire/deer fence, clearing a fence corridor, installing/removing t‑posts, anchors, and stretching and installing fence over rough terrain.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience driving 4‑wheel‑drive vehicles on rough and uneven terrain.
  • Experience operating and maintaining various power equipment used in vegetation control and fencing including but not limited to line trimmers, backpack sprayers, chainsaws, rockdrill, hand tools etc.
  • Demonstrated experience working as an effective team member and contributor.
  • Basic math skills and ability to read tape measures.
  • Must have the ability to walk extensively on rugged terrain, conduct repetitive actions, eye, hand, feet coordination; and occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, balancing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Must be able to repetitively lift and carry 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience implementing nuisance animal control using live‑capture traps and lethal traps.
  • 2-3 Years of experience back country cattle, hogwire or deer fencing construction and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of small engine and power tool maintenance and repair.
  • Basic Aviation Safety/Sling Load certification.
  • Experience in welding and fabrication.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working on a military installation.
