Position Summary

The Deck Engineer’s primary focus will be to maintain passenger vessel mechanical systems, conduct minor repairs as necessary and able and act as crewman aboard the vessel assigned to, under the direction of the vessel captain.

Duties And Responsibilities
  • Able to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical and electrical malfunctions, recommend proper remedies, and execute or repair with direction of most vessel mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Schedule and execute preventive maintenance program on daily, weekly, and monthly basis with the support of Captain, other maintenance, and engineering staff.
  • Responsible for overall upkeep of the vessel and maintenance resources.
  • Cleaning and general housekeeping of machinery spaces.
  • Make minor repairs to vessel engine machinery and deck equipment. Conduct diesel engine preventative maintenance and repairs, including oil and fuel filter changes, grease bearings, pump repairs, valves, sanitary, water, batteries, and fuel system. These tasks will be identified in the Company’s maintenance system, Wheelhouse Technology.
  • Completed maintenance tasks will be documented in Wheelhouse Technology and vessel logbooks.
  • Maintain necessary tools, filters, and replacement parts on hand as needed.
  • Cognizant of situational safety; noise, rotating machinery, hot fluids and moving space.
  • Follow regulatory and company safety and pollution prevention policies and procedures.
  • Oversee or assist preparing the vessel for all USCG annual inspections and dry docks.
  • Attend and successfully complete shore side training as required by the company.
  • Learn and maintain all plumbing, firefighting, sanitary and safety system, and assist Captain with their use.
  • Conduct emergency safety drills with crew and Captain.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor and respond to questions from the general public in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Possess thorough knowledge of all company policies, procedures, and Emergency Response Activities.
  • Additional job duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications
  • This is an un-licensed position, although licensed applicants are most welcome.
  • Maritime school, maintenance related trade school training, or armed forces machinery technician.
  • Work boat experience either in the oil, fishing or passenger vessel industries is a plus.
  • Ability to lift weights of 50 lbs. or more safely, at times on moving vessels.
