Work Site: Districtwide
Term of Employment: 237-Day Contract, 8 Hours Per Day
Position SummaryThe Custodian is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and healthy learning and working environment for students, staff, and visitors. This position performs daily cleaning, maintenance, security, and facility support duties in classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, common areas, and school grounds.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Custodial Services- Maintain a thorough understanding of district facilities, cleaning methods, supplies, and equipment.
- Follow established cleaning procedures using appropriate chemicals and equipment.
- Clean and maintain classrooms, offices, restrooms, lounges, corridors, and assigned areas.
- Secure buildings by locking doors, closing windows, turning off lights, and adjusting heating or cooling systems as needed.
- Participate in required training and retraining sessions.
- Inspect facilities and report unsafe conditions to the Head Custodian or administrator.
- Operate equipment safely to prevent injury to self and others.
- Maintain high standards of personal appearance and hygiene.
- Inspect equipment regularly and ensure it remains clean, operational, and in good repair.
- Move furniture and equipment as needed for school activities and events.
- Comply with all regulations regarding the storage and disposal of trash, waste, and recyclable materials.
- Remain on school premises during assigned work hours and authorized building-use periods when required.
- Report any damage to school property immediately.
- Maintain facility security and monitor assigned areas.
- Maintain school grounds in a safe condition.
- Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues, supervisors, and administrators.
- Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior at all times.
- Follow district policies, administrative rules, and regulations.
- Complete assigned tasks accurately and efficiently.
- Perform duties in a manner that minimizes disruption to the educational environment.
- Prioritize personal safety and the safety of others.
- Maintain accountability for supplies, materials, tools, and equipment.
- Complete required records, reports, and documentation in a timely manner.
- Perform manual labor, including lifting and moving furniture, equipment, supplies, and materials.
- Maintain uniforms, tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe, clean, and operational condition.
- Report unsafe conditions immediately to the supervisor.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor or Superintendent.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass employment verification and background checks.
- Good physical health.
- Ability to lift heavy objects and maintain full use of hands and feet.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work effectively with others.
- Ability to safely operate custodial machinery and equipment.
The position requires the ability to:
- Perform manual labor for up to 8 hours per day.
- Stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, climb ladders, and drive as needed.
- Lift and carry materials as follows:
- Up to 70 pounds from floor to mid-thigh occasionally.
- Up to 60 pounds from mid-thigh to shoulder occasionally.
- Up to 40 pounds from shoulder to overhead occasionally.
- Carry up to 70 pounds occasionally.
- Work overhead, at floor level, in confined spaces, and from ladders.
- Demonstrate hand-eye coordination and normal visual capabilities.
- Move furniture and operate custodial equipment, including vacuums and floor buffers.
- Utilize team lifting procedures for loads exceeding 50 pounds whenever possible.
- Complete Bloodborne Pathogens Standard Training.
- Follow proper body mechanics and lifting techniques.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including:
- Back supports
- Safety eyewear
- Non-skid footwear
- Steel-toed shoes, when required
- Read, understand, and follow all safety precautions related to chemicals, equipment, tools, and materials.
- Complete all required safety training.
- Demonstrate knowledge of:
- Chemical handling procedures
- Chemically treated surfaces
- Universal hygiene precautions
- Computerized work order and inventory systems (e.g., School Dude and Inventory Direct)
- Multimedia and current technology equipment
- Hand tools and custodial equipment
- Cleaning chemicals and materials
- Ladders and trade-specific equipment
- Indoor and outdoor work settings
- Exposure to varying temperatures, weather conditions, noise levels, and air quality
- Occasional work in wet or unsanitary conditions
- Emergency response situations, including sewer stoppages and facility emergencies
- Frequent interruptions and changing priorities
- Overtime and after-hours work as needed
- Independent work with limited direct supervision
- High levels of flexibility, patience, and self-motivation
