CUSTODIAN
REPORTS TO:
CUSTODIAL SUPERVISOR
Under direct supervision, custodians perform a wide range of custodial and related duties for assigned campus areas. Provides general cleaning and custodial care and support, transfers equipment/furniture, and sets up classrooms for assigned campus buildings, facilities, structures and adjacent areas, including, but not limited to, campus offices, classrooms, science laboratories, art rooms, gymnasiums, locker rooms, student residences, patios, entryways and walkways, and workshops.
Custodial staff may work independently or as part of a custodial team.
- Sweeps, mops, burnishes, and strips floors in rooms and halls with necessary automated equipment.
- Dusts and/or polishes furniture, blinds, and equipment; empties trash receptacles.
- Cleans all glass windows, lights fixtures and water fountains.
- Cleans restrooms and fills dispensers.
- Vacuum, spot clean, and/or shampoo rugs, carpets, and upholstery using commercial-type vacuum cleaners and shampooing equipment.
- Reports malfunction of bathroom fixtures, light fixtures, and/or damages to room and hall furnishings to supervisor.
- Stocks area with appropriate supplies.
- Locks and unlocks doors as directed.
- Reports necessary details and information for work orders for repair/maintenance.
- Moves furniture, equipment, or fixtures as required, including use of ladder as needed.
- Sets up classrooms and meeting rooms for a variety of meetings/activities.
- Checks and updates fire extinguishers.
- Cleans and clears leaves, dust and debris from designated areas such as sidewalks, entryways, and roofs as required. Remove exterior trash from receptacles in those areas.
- May be required to operate a forklift in the performance of duties.
- May deliver mail.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
- Must possess a valid New Mexico or Texas driver’s license.
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work.
- Knowledge of safety processes, procedures, and equipment needed to complete assigned tasks safely.
- Skill in using cleaning equipment and products.
- Skill in following verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to read and write at a level appropriate for the duties of the position and to follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety.
- Ability to operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies applicable to the position; observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methods as required.
- Ability to perform work involving regular physical activity.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships.
- Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, climb, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Positions may require the ability to safely move up to 50 pounds and drive a forklift.
