ABOUT US QUALIFICATIONS
- Education:
Bachelor’s degree in science (BS) with a major in safety, environmental health, industrial hygiene, occupational health, or a related field. Master’s preferred. - Experience:
Five (5) years’ experience in the safety and environmental health professional field, preferably in an academic setting. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is preferred. Experience in use of computer word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Excellent verbal, communication, and organizational skills.
Responsible for the development, coordination, implementation and monitoring of all aspects of environmental health and workplace safety for the campus community. This includes day‑to‑day compliance with local and federal health and safety regulations as well as response in emergency situations that involve environmental or workplace hazards. Coordinates the College’s participation in the Illinois Community College Risk Management Consortium (ICCRMC) and the filing of insurance claims.
Acts as the budget manager for the department responsible for the processing of purchase orders, paying bills, and the submission of the annual budget request.
- Updates the “Environmental Health & Safety Procedure Manual” as needed to stay current with regulations and to provide a safe educational and working environment, as required in Section 13.23.0 Environmental Health of the “Board of Trustees Policy Manual”.
- Ensures the College follows Illinois Department of Labor regulation 820 ILCS 225 Health and Safety Act, which adopts the federal Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) regulations for state employees, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency regulations and local fire code/building regulations.
- Provides technical support, expertise and training to the College community in issues of workplace safety, the environment, and associated regulations.
- Manages and monitors the College’s Hazardous Waste Program to ensure compliance related to the handling and disposal of hazardous waste.
- Manages and monitors the College’s Asbestos Management Program to ensure compliance related to community safety, abatement activities and proper waste disposal.
- Responsible for coordinating the testing, maintenance and repair of the college’s fire alarm systems, eye wash stations, first aid kits and AED stations.
- Manages the College’s Environmental Management Plan to ensure reporting compliance for air emissions, underground storage tank monitoring, universal wastes and use of pesticides.
- Conducts inspections of college facilities and observes activities on college property for unsafe conditions that may lead to personal injury or property damage. Performs accident investigations and takes appropriate action to correct any unsafe practices or situation.
- Coordinates the management of the College’s Workers Compensation Program. Conducts incident investigations involving College employees and/or property. Records employee incidents on the OSHA 300 log and reports incidents to insurance. Partners with Human Resources on pay, benefits and return to work.
- Serves as central contact and coordinates various functions across the campus for effective risk management. This includes asset protection, coordinating various campus risk management groups and some facets of the college’s insurance.
- Prepares and trains the College community on the emergency evacuation plan and coordinates evacuation drills.
- Serves as a permanent member of the Campus Emergency Operations Center Team and Emergency Preparedness Committee.
- Oversees monthly Safety Committee meetings.
- Remains current with safety and environmental rules, regulations and issues through journals, training seminars, conferences and professional organizations.
- Ensures standards for good public relations between State agencies and Harper College are maintained.
- Participates in the department’s annual budget process.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
