Role Overview
The Data Center 5S & Logistics Technician supports Microsoft's critical infrastructure by executing 5S organizational practices, maintaining clean and efficient work environments, and performing logistics operations that keep hardware, tools, and materials flowing smoothly. This is a vendor supported position embedded within Microsoft's data center operations team.
Key Responsibilities
5S Sorting - Identify, remove, and properly dispose of unnecessary items in technical and storage areas to maintain a lean environment.
Set in Order Organization - Arrange tools, parts, and materials using labeling, color coding, and visual management systems.
Shine & Cleaning - Perform routine cleaning around racks, aisles, storage zones, and critical equipment to reduce dust and contamination risks.
Standardization Support - Follow and help refine standardized workflows, checklists, and documentation for logistics and 5S tasks.
Sustainment Audits - Conduct recurring 5S inspections, record findings, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Inventory Control - Receive, track, label, and organize incoming hardware, cables, and consumables using Microsoft inventory systems.
Critical Area Upkeep - Maintain cleanliness and organization around UPS rooms, cooling systems, and high priority operational zones.
Logistics Coordination - Support hardware movement, staging, kitting, and returns to ensure technicians have what they need when they need it.
Any cleanup or organizational work required to keep technical spaces efficient, safe, and audit ready.
Required Skills & Experience
Experience in data center logistics, warehouse operations, or technical facilities support, helps but not required
Pursuing certifications
Familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies
Ability to lift and move equipment (typically 30-50 lbs)
Strong attention to detail and comfort working in structured, process driven environments
Basic understanding of IT hardware components (servers, cables, racks) preferred
Ability to work in secure, access controlled environments

Inventory is accurate, labeled, and easy to locate
Technicians experience faster response times due to improved organization
5S audits show consistent improvement

What You'll Be Doing
Support inventory tracking, asset management, and equipment staging
Assist with receiving, organizing, and moving hardware across the site
Coordinate logistics for incoming/outgoing deliveries
Maintain accurate documentation of inventory and operational tasks
Assist with rack movement and material flow throughout the data center
Follow safety procedures and operational guidelines in a fast-paced environment
What We're Looking For
entry level candidates from technical training programs (Per Scholas strongly preferred)
Foundational understanding of:
o Hardware, networking, or IT systems
o Data center environments or structured cabling (a plus)
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow processes
Reliable, team-oriented, and eager to learn
Able to work in a hands-on, physical environment (lifting, walking, standing)

This is a Contract position based out of Hoffman Estates, IL.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $21.00/hr.
