Position Summary
Ottawa Area Intermediate School District is seeking a dependable, self-motivated Custodian to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors. The successful candidate will take pride in their work, have strong attention to detail, and be committed to providing excellent customer service.
Essential Job Functions
- Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, breakrooms, hallways, and other common areas with consistent attention to detail.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and maintain floors and surfaces to a high standard of cleanliness.
- Empty trash and recycling; restock paper and soap dispensers.
- Perform routine floor care, including machine scrubbing, burnishing, and periodic refinishing.
- Set up and tear down rooms for meetings and events, providing responsive, service-oriented support to staff and visitors.
- Identify and report maintenance or safety concerns promptly.
- Safely operate custodial equipment and follow all district safety procedures.
- Work independently and reliably as part of the Facilities Management team.

Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Custodial or commercial cleaning experience preferred but not required.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Time management skills and the ability to work independently.
- Working knowledge of cleaning products, chemicals, and equipment (e.g., floor buffers, scrubbers, extractors, vacuums), or ability to learn quickly.
- Understanding of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and safe chemical handling, storage, and disposal practices.
- Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions, including cleaning schedules, work orders, and safety protocols.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for the routine care and troubleshooting of custodial equipment.
- Strong customer service orientation and professionalism when interacting with staff, students, and visitors.
Physical & Environmental Requirements
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds regularly, with or without mechanical assistance.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching throughout the shift.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, covering a large school facility across an 8-hour shift.
- Repetitive motions associated with mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and operating floor care equipment.
- Ability to navigate stairs and move safely between multiple floors and building areas.
- Manual dexterity to safely operate custodial equipment, hand tools, and cleaning devices.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, and allergens; must follow personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols.
- Occasional exposure to loud noise from custodial equipment such as buffers and vacuums.
- Work performed primarily indoors across classrooms, gymnasiums, cafeterias, and restrooms, with occasional outdoor tasks (e.g., trash removal, walkway upkeep) in varying weather.
Compensation & Employment Details
- Pay range: $20.46-$23.38, commensurate with experience.
- Schedule:
Full time, full year, 261 working days. Monday–Friday | 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. - Benefits:
