Position Summary
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across the church campus. This role supports worship services, ministry activities, administrative offices, special events, and daily operations by ensuring that facilities are properly cleaned, sanitized, set up, and maintained in accordance with established standards. The Custodian serves as a representative of the church’s commitment to excellence, professionalism, hospitality, and stewardship, reflecting the church's mission and values.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Facility Cleaning & Maintenance
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, classrooms, offices, sanctuaries, fellowship halls, and common areas.
- Sweep, mop, vacuum, strip, wax floors, and window cleaning as needed.
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles and ensure proper disposal.
- Replenish restroom, cleaning, and sanitization supplies.
- Support seasonal and special projects (deep cleaning, holiday preparations, campus-wide events).
Event & Service Support
- Set up and break down rooms for worship services, meetings, classes, funerals, weddings, and special events.
- Ensure clean, orderly, and prepared entrances, lobbies, and high-traffic areas before and after services and events.
Safety & Compliance
- Identify and report maintenance issues, safety hazards, or needed repairs to Facilities Management.
- Follow established cleaning schedules, safety protocols, and chemical handling procedures.
- Properly use and maintain custodial equipment and supplies.
- Assist with emergency cleanups (spills, floods, biohazards) as needed.
Grounds & General Support (as assigned)
- Assist with basic exterior upkeep, including walkways, entryways, and common outdoor areas.
- Support facilities projects and other duties as assigned by management to meet operational needs.

Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous custodial, janitorial, or facility experience preferred; experience in a large facility or church environment is a plus.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
- Knowledge of proper cleaning methods, equipment, and safety practices.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical tasks such as bending, standing, and walking for extended periods.
- Ability to operate custodial equipment (e.g., vacuums, floor buffers, carpet cleaners).
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently and as part of a team.

Work Environment
- Indoor and outdoor church facilities across a multi-building campus.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, equipment, noise, lighting, and varying temperatures.
- High-volume activity during weekends, holidays, Sunday services, and major church events.
- Exposed to outside weather conditions.
- Work in high, precarious places or around church members, visitors, and staff.
- Continual use of OSHA-approved chemicals.
Physical Requirements
- Standing, walking, bending, kneeling, balance, stoop, crawl, and climbing.
- Lifting, pushing, and pulling cleaning equipment and supplies.
- Ability to respond quickly to urgent cleaning or safety needs.
- Ability to communicate by talking and hearing.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and color vision.
