Job Description The Opportunity
The Custodian is responsible for performing housekeeping, general cleaning, and other assigned tasks to maintain the cleanliness and safety of the school building and grounds. As a key member of the statewide Facilities team, the Custodian reports to the Campus Facilities Manager. This full‑time position requires occasional night, weekend, and emergency shifts to provide a clean, safe learning environment for students and faculty.
Key Responsibilities- Open facilities for school use: unlock doors, disable alarm system, activate HVAC and lights, conduct quick safety inspection.
- Maintain a safe working environment for KIPP Texas students and faculty.
- Learn building systems such as fire alarm, burglar alarm, main shut‑off, and electrical breaker systems.
- Perform general cleaning duties: sweep, mop floors, clean entrance windows, restock and clean restrooms, clean drinking fountains and whiteboards, remove trash.
- Pick up trash on and around school grounds, including athletic fields.
- Respond to emergency cleanups of various substances.
- Operate, clean, and maintain equipment (mops, buckets, autoscrubber, etc.).
- Daily laundry tasks (towels, mops).
- Perform floor work: stripping and waxing floors, sealing floors, extracting carpet stains.
- Execute small handyman duties: replace light bulbs, clean air filters, paint as needed.
- Assist with cleaning campus vehicle fleet if applicable.
- Move and rearrange furniture; assist with breakfast/lunch set‑ups.
- Report supply orders and equipment issues to supervisor(s) weekly.
- Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
- Attend meetings, professional development sessions, and training ("Continuous Learning").
- Basic reading and writing; 0–2 years of housekeeping/janitorial experience, preferably in a school setting.
- Driven by determination to keep the campus clean.
- Extreme flexibility, strong work ethic, entrepreneurial spirit to accommodate shifting priorities.
- Good manual dexterity, detail‑oriented, self‑directed, sense of urgency.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and identify problems proactively.
- Commitment to tasks at hand; strong ethics; customer‑focused; resourceful; willing to learn.
- Ability to lift and carry 20–50 lbs.
- Proven written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic computer skills preferred.
- Fluent English preferred; not required.
