Automotive Technician, Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Position Description
Position Overview:
Under general supervision, the Lead Technician is responsible for performing required vehicle maintenance and thorough inspections of all vehicle systems, diagnosing, and troubleshooting issues, and performing high-quality and efficient repairs to county-owned vehicles and equipment, as assigned in accordance with Harris County Fleet Services and OEM standards. In addition to these duties, the Lead Technician will oversee a team of technicians, providing guidance and support, particularly on problematic vehicles and rechecks.
They will assist with quality assurance, training, and may serve as a backup coordinator to help manage productivity and workflow.
Job Duties:
Oversee and assist a team of technicians providing guidance on problematic vehicles, rechecks, and ensuring quality assurance.
Perform required Vehicle Maintenance and thorough inspection of all Vehicle Systems, including Engine, Brakes, Steering, Suspension, A/C, and Electrical
Diagnose, troubleshoot, and perform high quality and efficient repairs with a "fix it right, the first time" approach
Perform Quality Control Inspections on vehicles repaired in-house and at vendors to ensure repairs are completed to Fleet Standards.
Create Estimates and communicate directly and effectively with Service Coordinators and Parts Department
Assist with training and development of technicians, ensuring they follow best practices and maintain high standards of work
Serve as a backup service coordinator as needed

RequirementsEducation:
High school diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited educational institution.
Experience:
Minimum of 5-7 years of experience as an automotive technician, with significant time spent on various vehicle systems (engine, brakes, steering, suspension, A/C, electrical).

Must have the ability to work well with others in a diverse and high-volume environment.
Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Must possess strong organizational skills.
Must move with a purpose in a high-volume environment.
Must have the ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.
Must maintain a professional appearance and manner.
Must maintain a clean workspace and follow all safety protocols.
Licensure:
Must maintain a valid Texas Driver's License at all times.

PreferencesEducation:
An associate degree in automotive technology or a related field is preferred
Completion of an Automotive program from accredited trade school or college
Experience:
Previous experience in a leadership role or as a senior technician is preferred, demonstrating capability in overseeing and training junior technicians.
Experience in a dealership or fleet maintenance environment is highly beneficial.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
Able to work in hot and cold conditions and in tight places
May be exposed to dust, dirt, fumes, etc.
Able be able to lift and/or move 50 lbs.
Must be available to work various shifts
May be asked to work at different shop locations based on Fleet Workload
