Payroll Accountant
We are seeking a Payroll Accountant with at least three years of payroll and accounting experience for a position with a reputable organization located in the Chicago Loop/Downtown Chicago area. The ideal candidate will have experience processing payroll, preparing payroll-related accounting entries, and utilizing ADP Workforce Now.
Position Type:
Temp to Hire
Contract Rate: $30-$33/hr.
Perm Salary: $65,000 - $75,000
Worksite Type:
Hybrid (4 days onsite)
Payroll Accountant Responsibilities:
- Process weekly, bi-weekly, and semi-monthly payroll for employees
- Calculate and reconcile employee federal and state income taxes, Social Security taxes, unemployment taxes, and workers' compensation payments
- Prepare and process employee payroll deductions and adjustments
- Manage wage garnishments and other payroll-related with holdings
- Review and reconcile payroll data from timesheets and attendance systems
- Maintain PTO, vacation, sick leave, and other employee leave balances within the payroll system
- Prepare payroll reimbursement requests and related documentation
- Record monthly payroll journal entries and account reconciliations
- Review, analyze, and verify payroll reports for accuracy and compliance
- Assist with month-end and year-end close activities related to payroll
- Prepare quarterly and annual payroll tax filings and supporting schedules
- Support internal and external audits by providing payroll documentation and analysis
- Assist with special projects and process improvement initiatives as requested by management
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 3+ years of payroll and/or payroll accounting experience
- Experience preparing payroll journal entries and account reconciliations
- Previous experience with ADP Workforce Now required
- Strong understanding of payroll tax regulations and compliance requirements
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines
- High degree of professionalism and accountability
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with payroll accounting, general ledger reconciliations, and month-end close
- Knowledge of multi-state payroll processing
- Advanced Excel skills (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables, and data analysis)
