Position SummaryThe Health Care Specialist provides rapid care for student health, injuries, and illnesses, working with medically fragile and cognitively impaired students, and performs technical nursing procedures under the direction of a Licensed School Nurse.
Primary Job Functions- First Aid
- Administer first aid, emergency, and episodic care within nursing licensure.
- Monitor students and refer to the LSN for further assessment or intervention.
- Cooperation
- Assist the LSN in planning services for students with special needs.
- Assist with special Education evaluations.
- Develop Individual Health Plans under LSN supervision.
- Act as a team member of Health Services and attend IEP meetings as Health Services, TAT, or SST representative.
- Record Keeping
- Maintain health records, emergency cards, pupil health records, physicals, and medical documentation.
- Maintain data logs per Lead Nurse’s request and compile them into a year‑end report (May).
- Document all duties performed accurately.
- Keep confidential health files for students, granting access only to staff who need to know.
- Maintain third‑party billing documentation.
- Assist with school screenings under LSN supervision.
- Comply with communicable disease procedures under LSN direction.
- Collect immunization data per state mandates to reduce disease spread.
- Delegated Functions
- Administer medications, simple and complex, under LSN direction and school policy (e.g., G‑tube, respiratory suctioning, wound dressing, catheterization).
- Support technical health needs as directed by the LSN.
- Other Duties as Assigned
- By Building Principal or Special Education Director.
- By supervising LSN or Lead Nurses.
- Provide selected health‑care trainings.
- Participate in local time studies.
Internal Office Professional candidates must pass qualifying testing prior to bidding. Successful candidates must score in each of the following areas:
Health Care Assessment, Microsoft Word, Basic Office Skills, and Following Written Instructions.
Voucher up to 8 hours for prep time may be scheduled with supervisory approval.
Job Specifications (Requirements)- Current Minnesota Board of Nursing license as an LPN or RN.
- Positive interaction with people of all ages.
- Current CPR certification.
- Current First Aid certification.
- Work within the scope and practice of the position.
- Proficiency in Windows‑based computer software.
- Prompt and reliable attendance.
- Effective communication with students, parents, staff, and community.
- Demonstrated appreciation of diversity in all interactions.
- No written reprimand or higher in the past 12 months.
- Not on a Performance Improvement Plan.
- Skills assessment per OPEIU testing process.
Knowledge of and experience with children having special health needs or involved in special education.
