Position: CHIEF ENGINEER I (CORRECTIONAL FACILITY)

Chief Engineer I (CF) - Job Description

Under the directions of the Correctional Plant Supervisor, the Chief Engineer I, CF, will plan, assign, and supervise the work of and, as necessary, works with skilled and semi‑skilled workers, incarcerated persons, engaged in the operation, maintenance, and repair of heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air‑conditioning systems, including stationary engines, boilers, compressors, pumps, condensers, steam lines, water lines, gas lines, controls and meters;

directs the maintenance and repair of water treatment and waste water plant, electrical, elevator, and laundry equipment, shop machinery, and similar equipment; may direct the analysis of boiler feed water samples and determine water treatment; may supervise servicing and maintenance of fire extinguishers and other fire protection equipment; evaluates staff performance and takes or recommends appropriate action; prepares requisitions for fuel, equipment, and maintenance supplies;

is responsible for the clean and orderly condition of boiler rooms and related equipment rooms; keeps or directs the keeping of charts and records; prepares reports; maintains, operates, and repairs the heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems (H.V.A.C.), lighting systems; mechanical; electrical; electronic and plumbing systems of the physical plant. Maintains order and supervises the conduct of persons committed to the Department of Corrections;

prevents escapes and injury by these persons to themselves or others or to property; maintains security of working areas and work materials; inspects premises and searches incarcerated persons, wards, residents, or patients for contraband, such as weapons or illegal drugs.

  • Knowledge of heating, ventilating, refrigeration, air‑conditioning, electrical, water, sewage, and other mechanical systems, and the methods, materials, and tools used in their operation, maintenance, and repair; safety orders of the California Division of Industrial Safety applying to heating electrical, and other related mechanical equipment; principles of effective supervision;

  • Ability to read and write English at a level required for successful job performance; direct the work of installing, operating, and maintaining heating, ventilating, refrigeration, and air‑conditioning systems, and other mechanical systems; plan and direct the work of skilled crafts persons and semi‑skilled workers, inmates, wards, residents, and patients; keep accurate records and prepare reports; think and act quickly in emergencies; effectively contribute to the Department's affirmative action objectives.
