Job Description

Join our buildings and grounds department for the Fort Osage School District. This position is an 8‑hour night shift, qualifying for applicable vacation, personal, and sick time. Report times vary, but are for evening hours. This position qualifies for district‑paid health care benefits and retirement contributions.

Pay for the  school year begins at $16.53 per hour, steps determined based on previous related custodial experience.

This position reports to the Head Day Custodian, Building Principal, and/or District Custodial Supervisor.

Purpose Statement

The job of Custodian is to provide custodial and maintenance services in and around district facilities, ensuring an attractive, sanitary, and safe environment for students, staff and visitors; performing a variety of special cleaning operations; and assisting in preparing facilities for classroom activities and campus events.

Essential Functions
  • Assists with snow removal and grounds maintenance to ensure access and safety.
  • Attends unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. to gather required information.
  • Cleans assigned facilities and/or grounds (classrooms, offices, gym, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, water fountains, grounds, etc.) to maintain a sanitary, safe, and attractive environment.
  • Informs students and other site personnel of safety issues and proper maintenance of facilities and equipment.
  • Monitors students and staff in work areas to prevent injuries and ensure site safety.
  • Operates various machines and equipment (floor polisher, carpet extractor, buffer, pressure washer, wet‑dry vacuum, etc.) to complete maintenance duties safely and timely.
  • Performs summer maintenance (strip/wax floors, move furniture, paint, pull weeds, etc.) to support construction.
  • Prepares sites for daily operations (open gates, raise flags, sweep walkway, yard clean‑up, etc.) to ensure facilities are operational and hazard‑free.
  • Replenishes classroom and restroom supplies (paper towels, soap, light bulbs, ceiling tiles, etc.) to ensure adequate quantities for daily use.
  • Responds to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and/or visitors to provide information, take appropriate action, or direct to appropriate personnel.
  • Responds to immediate safety/operational concerns (facility damage, snake removal, vandalism, alarms, chemical spills, etc.) to take action or notify appropriate personnel.
  • Secures facilities and grounds (doors, gates, alarms, lights, etc.) to minimize property damage, equipment loss, and liability.
  • Supports other site maintenance staff (grounds, trades, etc.) to complete custodial activities.
Other Functions
  • Delivers items (supplies, packages, furniture, etc.) to distribute materials to appropriate parties.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient functioning of the work unit.

Minimum Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Skills required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions. Competencies include operating industrial maintenance equipment, using common tools, and adhering to safety practices.

Knowledge required basic math, reading and following instructions, understanding multi‑step written and oral directions. Competencies include methods of industrial cleaning and safety practices.

Ability required to schedule activities, collate data, consider factors when using equipment, work with others, and meet deadlines. Problem‑solving to identify issues and select action plans is required.

Responsibilities include working with immediate supervision, providing information and advising others, utilizing resources from other units as required.

Work Environment requires significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and fine finger dexterity. About 5% sitting, 75% walking, 20% standing. Minimal temperature variations. Hazard‑free environment.
