Position SummaryThe Elementary Head Custodian serves as the primary operational lead for a school facility, ensuring a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students and staff. This role balances daily custodial tasks with grounds maintenance, light mechanical repairs, and evening custodial services. The Head Custodian coordinates closely with the Principal to support building events while adhering to Facilities Department standards.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Complete daily custodial tasks including cleaning main entrance, front offices, common areas, and cafeteria; remove trash; and maintain floors.
- Monitor school grounds for trash and debris; empty exterior trash receptacles; routinely inspect playground equipment and mulch.
- Lead snow and ice removal (plowing/salting) and coordinate intensive summer deep-cleaning projects.
- Manage room setups/tear-downs for meetings and events, including furniture moving; adjust work hours for evening rentals and programs.
- Perform light repairs (lighting, ceiling tiles, etc.) and monitor building water softener systems.
- Monitor supply levels for cleaning and consumables; place orders via district warehouse to avoid interruptions.
- Use CMMS software to submit, track, and close out building work orders and maintenance requests.
- Lead daily building lock-down, alarm engagement, and participate in the Building Safety Committee; manage fire alarm system during drills.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding building activities and interact professionally with staff, students, and patrons.

Education and Experience- Minimum Education:
High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED). - Experience:
One to three months of related experience and/or training (landscaping or custodial preferred), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Driver’s License:
Must maintain a valid driver’s license. - Compliance:
Must pass a criminal background check and pre-employment/random drug and alcohol testing.
- Language
Skills:
Read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; read, speak, and write in English. - Mathematical
Skills:
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure; calculate chemical dilution ratios and interpret basic data. - Reasoning Ability:
Solve practical problems and handle variable situations with limited standardization. - Computer
Skills:
Proficiency with word processing and database software; use CMMS to manage workloads. - Basic Trades:
Proficiency in light maintenance (changing ceiling tiles, light bulbs, sink aerators, hanging frames). - Equipment Proficiency:
Operate and maintain custodial equipment (vacuums, floor scrubbers, carpet extractors).
- Physical Activity:
Prolonged walking, standing, bending, pushing, pulling, ladder climbing, kneeling. - Lifting:
Regularly lift up to 50 pounds; occasionally lift up to 100 pounds or more. - Vision:
Close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
- Conditions:
Exposure to moving mechanical parts and outdoor weather; occasional wet/humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, and vibration. - Noise Level: Typically loud when operating equipment; quiet during standard building hours.
