Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Building Maintenance, HVAC Tech / Heating Engineer
Location: Indianapolis
The Facilities Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing all preventative, on‑demand and improvement maintenance activities, including the upkeep, ongoing maintenance and improvement of safety and security equipment. This position reports to the Maintenance Supervisor or designee.
- Perform scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repairs to building systems – systems include but are not limited to single- and three‑phase electrical, lighting, HVAC, boilers, plumbing, backup power, and life safety.
- Perform monitoring and troubleshooting of critical systems, make repairs, or refer problems to the Maintenance Manager.
- Review all work and assure performance in accordance with established safety procedures, SOPs, and compliance with the Quality Management System.
- Conduct frequent inspections of the facility, grounds, and equipment.
- Perform monthly preventative maintenance tasks and reactive work orders as assigned.
- Report equipment, facility, and safety issues to the Maintenance Manager.
- Maintain all appropriate paperwork and record keeping, including daily logs, timesheets, routine and non‑routine maintenance records.
- Assist with miscellaneous building projects, including painting, drywall, carpentry, fixture installation, and equipment relocation.
- Emergency response – after‑hours calls on a rotating schedule.
- Maintain inventory of spare parts or supplies based on actual and/or projected usage.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma (or equivalent) and current experience in facility operations and maintenance; advanced training or certifications in electrical, HVAC, or steam boilers is a plus.
- Working knowledge of various hand and power tools, pumps, fans, blowers, and control valves.
- Basic understanding of HVAC, steam boilers, and facility environmental control systems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Maintain tools and supplies in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and direction.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
- Active driver’s license and reliable transportation to travel between facilities.
- Availability for overtime and weekend work as required (on‑call).
- Work may require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Work may require lifting, standing, and working around laboratory animals.
- Ability to read and understand information presented orally and in writing.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Good documentation practices.
