Job Summary for Civilian Employee of the Indiana State Police

Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventive maintenance as needed.
  • Complete assigned repair work as required.
  • Notify appropriate personnel of any visible major problems.
  • Keep work orders up to date.
  • Order parts and maintain garage stock room.
  • Keep area of assignment clean and orderly.
  • Assist in unloading supply trucks and loading old tires, empty oil drums, etc.
  • Periodically complete training for new procedures and skills.

Duties:

  • Perform repairs or preventive maintenance on various equipment (e.g., 3-prong accessories, antennas, camera systems, etc.).
  • Maintain various logs.
  • Use diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot and find problems.
  • Test drive commissions to ensure they are in working order.
  • Perform building custodian duties as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Essential Functions and

Job Requirements:

  • High school graduate or GED certificate.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy automotive objects.
  • Ability to communicate and follow instructions.
  • Ability to distinguish and determine colors and sounds.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in close and confined areas.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Diagnose problems on commissions.
  • Operate assigned tools and equipment and use automotive shop manuals.
  • Complete mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and computer repair jobs.
  • Use diagnostic testing equipment to troubleshoot and find problems.

Personal Work Relationships:

  • Work with Department personnel.
  • Work with auto dealers, service departments, body shops, and other professionals.

Physical Effort and Work Environment:

  • Work is typically performed in a garage environment.
  • Routine tasks require standing on cement for extended periods, working in confined areas, and exposure to hazardous materials and potentially dangerous equipment.
  • Work involves sitting, standing, crouching, kneeling, and periodic lifting of heavy objects.
