FLSA STATUS

Non‑Exempt.

REPORTS TO

Maintenance Director/Maintenance Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma, General Equivalent Development Certificate (GED) per West Virginia Code §18A-2-5.
  • Personnel must be or have been classified in this category or must pass the state prescribed exam for this position per West Virginia Code §18A-4-8e.
  • Criminal background check per WV Code §18-5-15c.
  • The ability to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position as contained in the Job Description.

Currently enrolled Pocahontas County High School Students are eligible to apply, however, preference will be given to current Pocahontas County regular and substitute staff. Students who may be hired do not earn seniority for the purposes of future employment or experience pay.

TITLE

Custodian is a person employed to keep buildings clean and free of refuse, to operate the heating or cooling systems, and to make minor repairs.

JOB SUMMARY

To perform duties which keep the county buildings in such a state of operating excellence that they present no problems or interruptions of the educational program. The custodian performs assigned custodial duties and repairs and receives supervision from the building administrator. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non‑prescribed drugs while in the workplace. Alcohol and controlled substances which affect employee productivity, safety or judgment in the workplace will not be tolerated.

Staff members serve as role models for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings. Staff members are expected to refrain from bullying, harassment, intimidation, and discrimination.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Dust, clean, and polish fixtures, woodwork, and equipment.
  • Wash windows and dust blinds.
  • Clean restrooms and replenish supplies.
  • Sweep, mop, wax, and polish floors, stairs, corridors, and courts using brooms, mops, and buffer.
  • Clean rugs and carpets with vacuum cleaner.
  • Dispose of trash and waste materials.
  • Clean doors, door facings, and walls with disinfectants.
  • Move equipment and supplies.
  • Check and replace light bulbs.
  • Sweep sidewalks around buildings.
  • Report safety hazards within and around buildings.
  • List and report needed repairs.
  • Store equipment.
  • Keep stock of inventory and request supplies as needed.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintain equipment.
  • Clean shower rooms and gym.
  • Operate and maintain weed eater, lawn mower, floor scrubber, floor buffer, and vacuum cleaner.
  • Arrange table and chairs for breakfast and lunch.
  • Secure the building at night.
  • Operate hand and small power tools.
  • Prepare facilities for activities and clean up after the activities.
  • Shampoo carpets.
  • Perform inspections for fire extinguishers and emergency lighting.
  • Clean ceiling and restroom vents.
  • Perform custodian work involving independent activity to keep school clean, sanitary, and in an orderly condition, as well as minor maintenance tasks.
  • Perform assigned manual work of ordinary difficulty and responsibility. Job assignments are in the form of written or oral instructions and are performed under supervision and reviewed periodically.
  • Maintain watch over property and grounds against trespassing, vandalism, and fire hazards. Signal police and fire departments when needed.
  • Maintain all floors in a clean and attractive condition, including regular waxing, and in a good state of preservation.
  • Display flags.
