State Minimum Salary Schedule for Service Personnel, State Custodial pay scale.

FLSA STATUS

Non‑Exempt.

REPORTS TO

Maintenance Director / Maintenance Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalent Development Certificate (GED) per West Virginia Code §18A‑2‑5.
  • Must be or have been classified in this category or pass the state prescribed exam for this position per West Virginia Code §18A‑4‑8e.
  • Criminal background check per WV Code §18‑5‑15c.
  • Ability to perform the job duties and responsibilities of the position as contained in the Job Description.
  • Currently enrolled Pocahontas County High School students are eligible to apply; preference will be given to current Pocahontas County regular and substitute staff. Students who may be hired do not earn seniority for the purposes of future employment or experience pay.
JOB SUMMARY

To perform duties that keep county buildings in a state of operating excellence, ensuring no disruptions to the educational program. The custodian maintains cleaning, minor repairs, and safety duties under the supervision of the building administrator, while acting as a role model for students and maintaining a drug‑free work environment.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain positive work habits and job attitude.
  • Perform all duties efficiently and productively.
  • Interpret various instructions and present information effectively.
  • Resolve practical problems and manage variables in limited standardization situations.
  • Comply with all state and county policies and regulations.
  • Maintain and update skills.
  • Dust, clean, polish fixtures, woodwork, and equipment.
  • Wash windows and dust blinds.
  • Clean restrooms and replenish supplies.
  • Sweep, mop, wax, and polish floors, stairs, corridors, and courts.
  • Clean rugs and carpets with vacuum cleaner.
  • Dispose of trash and waste materials.
  • Clean doors, door facings, and walls with disinfectants.
  • Move equipment and supplies.
  • Check and replace light bulbs.
  • Sweep sidewalks around buildings.
  • Report safety hazards within and around buildings.
  • Report needed repairs.
  • Store equipment and keep inventory stocked.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintain equipment.
  • Clean shower rooms, gym, and other facilities.
  • Operate and maintain weed eater, lawn mower, floor scrubber, floor buffer, and vacuum cleaner.
  • Arrange table and chairs for breakfast and lunch.
  • Secure the building at night.
  • Operate hand and small power tools.
  • Prepare facilities for activities and clean up afterward.
  • Shampoo carpets.
  • Perform inspections for fire extinguishers and emergency lighting.
  • Clean ceiling and restroom vents.
  • Support duties: display flags, fly flag at half‑staff, inventory supplies, report hazards, store equipment, service carpeted areas.
  • Assist in building maintenance: replace window glass, clean gutters, free stopped plumbing, repair leaks, paint, replace lights, and other related work.
  • Conduct general maintenance, upkeep, and repair program.
  • Maintain grounds: cut grass, trim bushes, rake, mulch, plant shrubs or flowers, repair walkways, and perform other site improvements.
  • Perform routine lubrication services and minor preventive maintenance.
  • Operate security systems and fire safety systems.
  • Inspect buildings and report deficiencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical strength, balance, hand‑eye coordination, and stamina are required. Duties include lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds and moving 50‑pound loads. Employees must stand, walk, and climb multiple sets of stairs while carrying materials weighing 30–60 pounds for up to eight hours per day. Tasks also include standing and walking continuously for the entire shift, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, and climbing.

Risks include sprains, strains, burns from chemical handling, and hazards from equipment such as lawn mowers, string trimmers, floor buffer, floor scrubber, and vacuums. Reasonable accommodation may be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The environment may range from below freezing (outdoors) to over 90°F (kitchen or furnace rooms). Surfaces can be slippery during mopping, stripping, or snow removal. Noise levels are moderate to loud (60‑90 dB). Reasonable accommodations are available for individuals with disabilities.

ADDITIONAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Applicants dismissed or whose contracts have been non‑renewed for cause by another school district, those with recent unsatisfactory evaluations or interview performance, or those receiving unfavorable reference recommendations are ineligible.
