Part-Time Custodian — Job Description

Reports To:

Superintendent or Secondary Principal

Hours:

Up to 20 hours per week Compensation: $14.50 per hour, may be adjusted based on qualifications and experience

Position Summary

The Part-Time Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly environment throughout the school building and grounds. The custodian works independently and cooperatively with school staff to ensure facilities are ready for students, staff, activities, and community use.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Sweep, dust, mop, scrub, and vacuum floors and other surfaces.
  • Clean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, and common areas.
  • Empty trash and recycling containers and dispose of waste appropriately.
  • Clean windows, doors, furniture, fixtures, and other building surfaces as needed.
  • Restock restroom and custodial supplies.
  • Keep custodial closets, storage areas, and equipment clean and organized.
  • Perform routine cleaning and basic upkeep of school facilities, including some maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs and/or filters, repairing faucets/toilets, mounting shelving units/bulletin boards, or putting together furniture.
  • Assist with setting up and taking down furniture and equipment for school activities and events.
  • Assist with unloading or transporting supplies, driving a truck or van, moving furniture, and picking up/setting up cafeteria tables.
  • Help maintain entrances, sidewalks, and other areas around the school as assigned.
  • Report maintenance, safety, or repair concerns to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Safely operate and maintain custodial equipment and cleaning tools.
  • Follow established safety procedures and instructions for the proper use and storage of cleaning products.
  • Maintain confidentiality and conduct oneself professionally around students, staff, and visitors.
  • Perform other custodial and related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous custodial or cleaning experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to follow directions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with school staff.
  • Ability to safely use basic custodial equipment and cleaning products.
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting.
  • Ability to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming school environment.
Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed inside a school building but may occasionally involve outdoor areas and varying weather conditions. The position may require working around students, staff, visitors, cleaning chemicals, dust, noise, and custodial equipment.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to routinely stand and walk, bend, stoop, reach, push, pull, climb stairs, and lift or carry supplies and equipment. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals with disabilities.

Terms of Employment
  • Part-time position, up to 20 hours per week.
  • Work schedule established by the school district based on building needs.
  • $14.50 per hour, but may be adjusted based on qualifications/experience
  • Continued employment is subject to district policies and satisfactory performance.
  • Background screening required
