Primary PurposeEnsure building and grounds are cleaned by using routine procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds.
Qualifications- High School Diploma (or GED); 3–4 years of experience required
- Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance, and safety procedures
- Aptitude for successful completion of tasks
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate personnel to accomplish tasks
- Broad knowledge of school housekeeping
- Ability to perform minor plumbing and electrical repairs
- Ability to operate and use cleaning equipment and supplies
- Ability to speak and understand English and Spanish (preferred)
- Six months of custodial services experience
- Work cooperatively with principals and supervisors to ensure high standards of safety and cleanliness; coordinate with the Custodian Night Lead to determine building needs.
- Daily clean offices, computer labs, library, health clinic, and custodial work spaces; maintain perimeter free of debris; stock and restore restroom supplies; perform minor plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repairs.
- Assist food services staff with daily trash pickup and clean cafeteria and corridors after meals.
- Perform first‑level maintenance repairs (plumbing, electrical, carpentry); inspect buildings for graffiti, broken windows, damaged doors, cracked bricks, and foundation concerns; report, repair, or clean as appropriate.
- Inspect interior and gym for damaged hardware, partitions, ceiling tiles, floors, walls, doors, and fixtures; report, repair, or clean as required.
- Conduct weekly roof checks, remove debris, and differentiate roof vs. condensation leaks by removing ceiling tiles when possible.
- Service HVAC system: check disconnects, reset circuit breakers, adjust thermostats, clean air supply and return grilles.
- Service electrical system: change ballasts, light bulbs, emergency exit lights, receptacle covers, reset circuit breakers, turn off building power, repair guards over fixtures.
- Service plumbing system: install valve kits, shut off water to appliances, replace washers in faucets, unclog restroom fixtures, light pilot lights on appliances and water heaters.
- Maintain supply and equipment inventory; request supplies as needed.
- Demonstrate professionalism, ethics, and responsibility; serve as a role model for staff, students, and the public.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Follow established safety procedures for lifting, climbing, and operating tools and equipment.
- Correct unsafe conditions and report them to supervisors promptly.
- Observe safety rules and district policy; wear personal protective equipment; report injuries and incidents immediately.
- Supervise and evaluate performance of custodial staff.
Tools:
Carpentry, plumbing, electrical and hand tools, buffer, stripper, wet/dry vacuum cleaner, shampooer, cleaning chemicals. Requires frequent standing, sitting, kneeling/squatting, bending, pushing, pulling, twisting, walking, climbing stairs/ladder, grasping, overhead reaching, and occasional irregular hours. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds without assistance, 30–55 pounds with assistance, and over 55 pounds with assistance. Work outside and inside on slippery or uneven surfaces; exposure to hot/cold temperatures, dust, chemicals, noise, and vibration.
