Position: Maintenance Worker I

The City of Jacksonville’s Public Works and Parks Department is seeking a Maintenance Worker I.

This role involves performing unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks in the construction, maintenance, upkeep, and repair of public works projects, parks grounds, athletic fields, and associated right‑of‑way/public property maintenance duties.

Responsibilities
  • Perform unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks in construction, maintenance, upkeep, and repair of public works projects, parks grounds, athletic fields, and right‑of‑way/public property maintenance duties.
  • Load and unload materials from trucks.
  • Operate machinery and tools such as shovels, picks, sling blades, sledgehammers, axes, trowels, chain saws, concrete saws, asphalt rollers, mowers, blowers, edgers, weed eaters, sprayers, pumps, patching machines, tamping devices, and other simple machines and equipment.
  • Set up safety equipment and barriers around job sites.
  • Clean and store tools and equipment.
  • Operate motor vehicles to transport materials, supplies, and tools.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the City of Jacksonville Core Competencies.
  • Perform related work as required.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge of standardized work routines and procedures used in construction, maintenance, upkeep, and repair of public works projects, parks grounds, athletic fields, and right‑of‑way/public property.
  • Knowledge of tools used in landscaping, maintenance, and construction work.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to operate machinery and tools listed above.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor under adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and move supplies and materials weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, including warning labels and symbols identifying hazardous materials.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles.
  • Ability to perform manual labor.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Must be able to perform manual labor and read and write English.
Licensing/Certification/Registration
  • Valid driver's license required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment.
  • Must qualify for and maintain a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver.
Other Requirements
  • Probationary period of six (6) months.
  • Class performs safety‑sensitive functions and is subject to pre‑employment and random drug/alcohol testing programs as set forth in the City of Jacksonville’s Drug Free Workplace Policy (Directive 0401).
  • Names of eligible promotional applicants will be automatically placed on the promotional eligibility list in date order of eligibility; when multiple employees become eligible on the same date, placement is in order of seniority with the City.

Certain service members and veterans, and the spouses and family members of such service members and veterans, receive preference and priority, and certain service members may be eligible to receive waivers for post‑secondary educational requirements. Veterans’ preference is encouraged.
