Job Summary
This position performs routine general cleaning and housekeeping of buildings, facilities, furniture, and equipment including routine care and maintenance of grounds. Primary responsibility is for the use of proper methods and materials in cleaning and in the operation of machinery used in such work. Assignments may either be to the day or night shift at a school, district administrative building or custodial pool.
May be assigned temporarily to other facilities as necessary. Work requires knowledge of and the ability to apply the techniques, methods and procedures used in custodial work and School Board policies and procedures applicable to the custodial section. The work is performed under general supervision, and instructions are specific in nature and work is subject to close inspection during progress and upon completion.
Where employees do not work under close supervision, work follows a well-established routine. This class lies above that of School Custodial Technician Trainee and below the class of School Custodial Technician II.
Essential Functions

1. Performs general custodial duties such as striping, scrubbing, mopping, sweeping, waxing, and polishing hard floor surfaces; cleaning carpeted surfaces; dusting and polishing furniture or fixtures; sanitizing toilets, washrooms and fixtures; and washing windows, woodwork and blinds.

2. Empty waste baskets and other waste receptacles; collect and dispose of trash in outside receptacles provided.

3. Operates and performs routine maintenance of powered cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbing, buffing, polishing machines and carpet cleaning machines in accordance with established procedures and/or manufacturer’s operating manual.

4. Performs general cleaning and maintenance of grounds and exterior walkways to include the use of power blowers and pressure washers.

5. Police and maintain grounds by picking up trash, trimming hedges, raking leaves, removing weeds and otherwise maintaining grounds and playground areas.

6. Makes minor repairs to buildings, facilities, furniture and equipment such as replacing burned out light bulbs, replacing light switch covers and electrical outlet covers, unstopping clogged drains and toilets, repairing and/or replacing minor cleaning equipment parts, and assembling, installing or adjusting desks, pencil sharpeners, doorknobs and associated fixtures and any other light maintenance using hand tools.

7. Routine biomedical cleaning to include (but not limited to) surface sanitization against communicable diseases, minor to moderate blood and bodily fluid spills, cleaning required following pest infestation, cleanup of sanitary sewer spills, etc.

8. Moves furniture and supplies.

9. Availability to work during emergencies to support City Shelters during normal scheduled hours and overtime as needed.

10. Ensure building security by turning off lights, locking doors and coding the alarm system.

11. Assists in setting up bleachers, chairs, tables, or other materials/equipment needed for school special events/meetings.

12. Reviews and know their role in the school’s lockdown and emergency protocols and procedures.

13. Reports suspicious activity or persons to the school safety officer or guardian.

14. May also perform a variety of miscellaneous duties (i.e., touch up painting, delivering equipment to teachers or staff, setting up and arranging furniture or special equipment, picking up paper or debris and assisting with basic pest control tasks as needed).
