STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

To provide a safe, sanitary, orderly, and attractive environment for patients, hospital employees and visitors. Responsible for repetitive tasks in routine cleaning and special assignments in designated areas and other assigned areas.

DESCRIPTION

This is a part time position working 60 hours per two week pay period.

Work Schedule:

This position works a variable schedule, Monday through Friday, consisting of three (3) 10‑hour shifts each week (typically 4:00 a.m. or 5:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m.). The schedule also includes every fourth weekend and two holidays annually.

JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Interacts with patients of all age groups (infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics) while performing duties.
  • Uses cleaning chemicals properly, including correct dilution, dwell time, and safe handling.
  • Cleans isolation rooms and follows required PPE and infection prevention procedures.
  • Cleans patient’s rooms, corridors, service areas, lounges, offices and assigned areas.
  • Cleans and makes up discharged or transferred patient rooms.
  • Cleans rest rooms and replenishes essentials/supplies.
  • Cleans stairwells, elevators and baseboards.
  • Collects linen and disposes of trash to designated area.
  • Performs thorough cleaning and disinfection of high‑touch surfaces per department standards.
  • Performs scheduled cleaning tasks, including ceiling vents, light fixtures, walls, windows, drapes, blinds, etc.
  • Cleans and disinfects non‑critical medical equipment, including: IV stands, pumps, beds, instrument carts, utensils, etc.
  • Moves equipment and furniture for cleaning and rearrangement.
  • Operates various types of cleaning equipment as required.
  • Cleans work area and equipment at the end of the shift.
  • Reports maintenance concerns, safety hazards, and supply needs to appropriate personnel.
  • Carries and responds to assigned JRMC pager and addresses cleaning requests throughout the shift.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Preparation and Training:
    Must be able to follow oral or written orders.
  • Work Experience:

    No formal experience is required; on‑the‑job training is provided. Previous institutional housekeeping experience desirable.
  • Attendance:
    Punctual and regular attendance is an essential responsibility. Employees are expected to report to work as scheduled, on time and prepared to start working, and remain at work for the entire shift.
  • Analytical Ability:
    Ability to recognize cleaning needs, prioritize tasks, and follow procedures to ensure areas are cleaned thoroughly, safely, and on time.
  • Independent Judgment:
    Work is performed independently. Employees must use their judgement to plan and carry out their work in situations where methods and procedures are established.
  • Contracts with Others:
    Frequent contact with patients, visitors and nursing personnel.
  • Supervising the Work of Others:
    Usually works independently; does not oversee work of others.
  • Responsibility for Welfare of Others:
    Carelessness could result in moderate harm to patients, visitors, and coworkers caused by wet floors or improper cleaning.
  • Mental/Visual Effort:
    Must be able to speak and write the English language in an understandable manner and see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately. Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
  • Working Conditions:

    Indoor work in a controlled environment; hands frequently in contact with water and cleaning solutions. May be required to work shifts other than the one for which hired. Subject to falls from wet floors or reactions from dust and disinfectants. Participates in and complies with the JRMC Safety Management Program. Maintains knowledge of and observes Standard Precautions. Follows infection prevention practices and approved cleaning/disinfection procedures.

    OSHA Job Classification:
    Category I - exposure to blood borne pathogens.
  • Material and/or Equipment:
    Operates a variety of cleaning equipment and tools, including vacuums, carts, mops, buckets, and other approved cleaning/disinfection equipment.
