Under general direction of the Operations Manager, the Custodian is responsible for preserving and maintaining the appearance of the library building and furnishings. The employee is part of a team effort to maintain an attractive, clean environment for staff and patron use of the library.

Has regular work contact with City and Library employees, suppliers, and the general public.
Essential DutiesTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Cleans and vacuums all areas of the library, including JATV, Ground Floor café, and all restrooms.
- Sets up and takes down tables, chairs, and podiums for programs, meetings, and voting days.
- Manages trash removal and coordinates recycling of paper, cardboard, aluminum, glass, plastic, books, and magazines.
- Arms and disarms, the building security and fire protection systems.
- Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies and prepares reordering requests.
- Collects litter on library grounds and empties exterior trash receptacles along Main Street and near the public parking lot.
- Assists the Operations Manager with moving and assembling library shelving.
- Follows all safety regulations, policies, and procedures; reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor; reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible; follows recognized safe work practices.
- Performs other special projects and other job duties as assigned or required during regular and non-business hours.
- All employees may be assigned by the City Manager or their designee to perform duties and assume responsibilities that are outside the scope of their work duties when the City Manager has declared a City disaster or the City Emergency Operations Center has been initiated.
Position Requirements /Qualifications
- Graduation with a High School diploma or equivalent.
- A minimum of 1 year of experience in custodial work is required.
- Access to personal or public transportation for job-related duties.
- Working knowledge of the safe use of common custodial tools and equipment (vacuums, mops, buffers, carts).
- Working knowledge of basic cleaning methods for floors, restrooms, glass, and surfaces.
- Working knowledge of the proper handling and storage of cleaning chemicals and supplies.
- Working knowledge of waste collection, recycling practices, and litter control.
- Working knowledge of workplace safety practices and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- General knowledge of building cleaning schedules and sanitation standards for public facilities.
- General knowledge of set‑up and tear‑down procedures for meetings, programs, and events.
- General knowledge of operations of building security and fire alarm systems.
- General knowledge of inventory tracking and supply reordering processes.
- General knowledge of identification of maintenance issues and reporting procedures.
