Main Purpose of Job

A Correctional Maintenance Officer I performs work involving the custody, security, and supervision of incarcerated individuals during maintenance and repair tasks in a correctional environment. The officer does not have supervisory responsibility for other employees and reports to a Correctional Maintenance Officer Supervisor (CMOS).

Position Duties
  • Maintain control and discipline among incarcerated individuals.
  • Conduct searches for contraband items.
  • Administer verbal or written disciplinary actions to incarcerated individuals for violations of conduct standards.
  • Enforce safety, sanitary, custody, and security rules and regulations.
  • Assign installation, maintenance, or repair tasks to designated incarcerated individuals with varying proficiency levels.
  • Train and instruct incarcerated individuals regarding methods and techniques, use of tools and equipment, and proper care of tools and equipment.
  • Inspect and approve or disapprove all work performed by incarcerated individuals to ensure adherence to quality standards.
  • Estimate time, materials, and supplies needed for assigned maintenance or repair tasks.
  • Order supplies and materials and maintain records of tools, supplies, and materials used.
  • Perform certain installation, maintenance, or repair tasks on plumbing infrastructure personally.
  • Plan and implement appropriate procedures.
  • Operate hand and power tools and equipment required for maintenance tasks.
  • Escort third‑party vendors and inspect completed work assignments.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High‑school diploma or equivalency certificate accepted by the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Two years of maintenance mechanic experience.
Licenses, Registrations, and Certifications

Employees may be required to operate motor vehicles; a valid Maryland motor‑vehicle operator’s license is required prior to permanent appointment. Some duties may require a Maryland driver’s license for transporting incarcerated individuals or supplies. All employees must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course to obtain the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate during the probationary period.

Special Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship or resident alien status.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Completed background investigation.
  • Oral interview.
  • Physical examination.
  • 24‑hour call‑in availability (must provide a reachable telephone number).
  • Substance‑abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09.
Common Disqualifiers
  • Unlawful use of natural cannabis or natural cannabinoids within the preceding 12 months.
  • No felony convictions; no misdemeanor convictions within five years; no probations or parole before judgment or within five years; not currently on parole or probation; no civil drug convictions within three years.
  • No convictions or probations for any 12‑point driving violation within five years.
  • Must meet the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission certification guidelines.
  • No separations from military service less than honorable.
