Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Job Description
Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) State Equipment Fleet is looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic, Automotive, Advanced Journey/Lead to help keep Alaska moving. This role includes paid training to obtain a CDL for qualified applicants.
What You Will Be Doing- Professionally maintain all heavy‑duty and light‑duty equipment and vehicles used in construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports, and other agency vehicles.
- Resolve unusual or complex equipment problems using a variety of techniques and methods.
- Perform routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment.
- Diagnose, maintain, repair, and modify systems including transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine, emissions, fuel injection, hydraulics, and air and electrical brake systems for light and heavy‑duty equipment.
As part of the SEF team you will help the department mission of keeping Alaskans moving through service and infrastructure, providing safe, economical vehicles to all state agencies.

Working EnvironmentThe position is located at MP 0.1 Alaska Peninsula Highway, King Salmon. Travel by small planes to remote locations is possible and includes day trips and overnight stays.
Candidate Requirements- Mechanical knowledge of machines and tools, design, repair and maintenance.
- Flexibility and rapid adaptation to change and new information.
- Vehicle maintenance knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts, and systems.
- Self‑management: sets realistic goals, works with minimal supervision, demonstrates initiative and responsibility.
Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required. The candidate must obtain and maintain a valid CDL within 120 days of hire. The applicant must also comply with DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy and obtain a Pre‑Employment drug test clearance.
Additional Eligibility- Use of firearms or ammunition required; candidates with a misdemeanor domestic violence conviction are ineligible.
- Provide your own hand tools; a bi‑weekly tool allowance is provided.
- References and proof of CDL must be submitted at interview.
