Custodian - Facilities - Juneau

Position Overview

Custodian I. Pay Grade(s): 4 ($18.98+ DOE). Exemption Status:
Non‑Exempt.

Purpose:

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, sanitary, and safe environment in assigned buildings and facilities. Duties may include performing unscheduled activities, notifying management of the need for servicing, and additional cleaning.

• Perform routine and deep cleaning tasks, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, trash removal, and restroom sanitation.
• Monitor and maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and request restocking as needed.
• Ensure proper and safe use of custodial equipment and cleaning chemicals.
• Respond to custodial issues, service requests, or complaints promptly and professionally.
• Perform floor care tasks such as stripping, waxing, polishing, and carpet spot cleaning.
• Identify and report building maintenance issues or safety hazards to appropriate personnel.
• Move equipment and supplies as needed, using proper lifting techniques or equipment.
• Perform other related duties as assigned to support a clean, safe, and well‑maintained facility.

• Knowledge of custodial cleaning techniques and equipment, including routine and deep cleaning for various facility types.
• Proficient in tracking inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and ensuring timely restocking as needed.
• Knowledge of safety protocols and the proper handling of cleaning chemicals and equipment to maintain a safe work environment.
• Excellent problem‑solving abilities to address and resolve custodial issues or complaints quickly and professionally.
• Proficient in various floor care techniques, such as stripping, sealing, waxing, polishing floors, and spot cleaning or shampooing carpets.
• Ability to identify when custodial equipment needs maintenance or repair and communicate these needs to management.
• Strong customer service skills to communicate effectively with staff and building occupants regarding cleaning concerns or service requests.
• Flexible and adaptable, able to adjust cleaning schedules and procedures based on changing facility needs or unexpected events.
• Ability to work well in a team, collaborating with other staff members and departments to ensure a clean, safe, and well‑maintained facility.

• High School Diploma or GED.
• General understanding of custodial and/or housekeeping services.
• Must be 21 years of age with a Valid Driver’s License.

• Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, perform repetitive tasks involving standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crouching.

• Some travel may be required on small aircraft or ferry.
• Certain positions at Tlingit and Haida may have exposure to certain hazardous materials or conditions. The supervisor will review these if applicable.
