Position: Traffic Signs & Markings Helper - BC-05

Assists in the fabrication of traffic signs and the installation and maintenance of traffic signs and a variety of pavement markings; and performs other related duties as required.

One immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Public Works – Traffic Division in Kailua‑Kona.

Working Hours

Monday – Friday; 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Responsibilities
  • Assists in painting pavement markings by setting traffic cones on freshly painted lines to keep traffic from smearing paint.
  • Assists in the application of various thermoplastic materials and raised pavement markers; performs other duties related to pavement markings.
  • Assists in the installation and maintenance of traffic signs.
  • Assists the painters by removing the old reflective sheeting and sanding, filing, and cleaning the plates for application of new reflective sheeting.
  • Assists in sign fabrication by screen process method or electro‑cut applications.
  • Weeds electro‑cut vinyl and applies transfer tape to signage; applies signage to reflective sheeted sign plates.
  • Assists in the maintenance of all vehicles and pavement markings and sign maintenance equipment.
  • Follows all safety laws, policies, and rules related to the traffic signs and markings operation.
  • Operates vehicle to transport equipment, supplies, and employees to worksite.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Training and Experience
  • Graduation from high school.
  • One year of work experience in preparing various surfaces and applying coats of paint and other coatings by brush, roller, spray gun and other means.
  • Possession of a valid State of Hawai‘i driver’s license (Class 3) or any other comparable driver’s license at time of filing.

A current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner’s Certificate is required prior to appointment.

Examining Process

All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant’s training, education and experience as presented in the application.

Knowledge and Ability

Knowledge of practices, tools and equipment used in applying paints and other painting material; methods of cleaning brushes and other painting equipment; methods of preparing surfaces for the application of paint and other coverings; and occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the trade.

Ability to perform manual work related to the preparation, installation and maintenance of traffic signs and pavement markings; work with various thermoplastic materials; work cooperatively and effectively with others; and understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
