The City of Katy is seeking a skilled and dependable maintenance professional to join our Public Works team. In this hands‑on role, you will maintain the City’s rights‑of‑way, public spaces, and facilities through landscaping, general maintenance, equipment operation, and repair work. From maintaining streetscapes and drainage areas to supporting community events and emergency response efforts, your work will have a direct impact on the safety, appearance, and functionality of our community.

SummaryPerforms general and specialty maintenance, landscaping, and repair work for assigned Facilities and City areas. Maintains inventory of ROW maintenance supplies.

- Performs routine/preventative maintenance activities; checks and repairs landscape items, assesses small engine, and various equipment; changes or replaces street signs and fixtures.
- Trims trees and bushes; cleans street drainage structures; mows and edges grass; applies fertilizer and mulch; sprays weeds; collects trash as needed.
- Provides assessment report to superintendent; assists with supervision of assigned areas; operates Bandit signs; prepares rights‑of‑way and coordinates with contracted services for City events as needed.
- Maintains an inventory of basic lawn maintenance products and related supplies; reports or orders supplies as needed.
- Assists with the set‑up of events, including emergency response operation preparedness.
- This position is considered critical personnel during a natural or manmade disaster and/or a catastrophic event. The employee may be required to perform services or duties for the benefit of the public and continuity of City operations, which may differ from the usual scope of this position.
- Employees in this position are considered essential critical infrastructure workers, as defined by the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), for purposes of business continuity.
- Performs other duties as required.
High school diploma or equivalent; AND five (5) years of general maintenance experience; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge- Department policies and procedures.
- Basic landscape irrigation systems, including repair and maintenance checks.
- Basic rights‑of‑way maintenance operations and ability to train and guide field staff.
- Safety policies, procedures, and practices.
- Contractual service provisions and ability to assess third‑party or extended service operations.
- Operating basic landscaping equipment, tractors, and familiarity with backhoe basic operations.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
- Receiving direction, working independently, and occasionally leading field operations.
- Valid State Driver’s License required.
Requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. Exertion may exceed 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 50 pounds of force frequently, or 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employees may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
