Job Description

As a Custodian, you will deliver measurable results in providing students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, healthy, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop.

Building Principal and Facilities Manager

Qualifications

We are seeking a candidate with a high school diploma, working knowledge of custodial duties, services, and equipment. Must have the ability to reach, lift (up to 50 lbs.), basic math, writing, eye‑hand coordination, sitting, stooping, and ability to talk, hear, see, speak and communicate effectively.

Applicants must be able to read and understand policies and procedures, follow verbal or demonstrated instructions, and perform all necessary upper and lower body movement. Demonstrate competency and experience in all areas of custodial services.

Responsibilities

Accountability

  • Communicates frequently with the Building Principal or designee and responds to changing priorities as instructed.
  • Follows schedules and procedures for the regular, ongoing custodial care of all school and office facilities of the district.
  • Keeps up to date with proper procedures and equipment; acts as a trainer to new or less skilled personnel in the use of power equipment, once fully trained.
  • Follows articles written in the bargaining agreements set forth by the Association and Board.
  • May be required to work flexible hours to meet the needs of RSU 21.
  • Remains on the school premises during school hours and during non‑school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and attendance is required.

Communication

  • Works closely with the lead people on staff to be directed through the work process.
  • Maintains the poise of a disciplined person; is tactful in dealing with others, resourceful and self‑reliant, and demonstrates respect for self and others. Is willing to accept suggestions and follow instructions.
  • Follows proper channels of command and exercises confidentiality of privileged information relating to school and personnel matters.
  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with administrators, staff, students, parents, and members of the community.

Safety Focused

  • Cleans and maintains safe walkways and entrances, doing snow removal, sanding/salting, and cleaning sand and debris from walkways and entrances.
  • Inspects playground equipment, makes minor repairs and reports larger repairs to the maintenance office so that work orders are generated.
  • Visually inspect fire extinguishers area once a month; initial the inspection card. If unsatisfactory or missing, notifies the maintenance office.
  • Routinely checks that lights are not out, replaces bulbs when possible, otherwise notifies maintenance office.
  • Works with Facilities Manager to ensure guidelines for division of responsibility for minor in‑school repairs and emergency repairs are observed.
  • Has experience with all power custodial equipment and proper safety procedures.
  • Inspects ceiling tiles daily for water damage and reports to maintenance office.
  • Checks daily to ensure all exit doors open and panic bolts working during building occupancy.

General Custodian

  • Cleans and arranges classrooms, hallways, stairs, landings, cafeteria, gym floors, bleacher areas, locker rooms, and restocks bath areas.
  • Maintains custodial closets with proper amount of product and keeps area clean and secure.
  • Uses experience and working knowledge of tools to do everyday entry‑level maintenance items to benefit the school.
  • Keeps grounds free from rubbish at all times.
  • Performs all other related duties as deemed necessary by the Building Principal or Facilities Manager.
