Job Title

The purpose of this classification is to provide lead guidance and direction to an assigned crew and serves as the primary skilled operator of heavy equipment used in the construction, maintenance, landscaping, and grounds keeping of City streets/roads, rights of way and other public areas.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Leading and coordinating daily work activities of assigned crew or co-workers
  • Adhering to established safety procedures
  • Driving or operating a variety of equipment in the maintenance and repair of City streets, rights of way, parks or other areas
  • Conducting pre- and post-trip inspections of equipment
  • Performing general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition
  • Responding to emergency calls during inclement weather or other emergency situations
  • Performing routine maintenance and repair tasks, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, laws, policies, and standards of quality and safety
  • Maintaining traffic control devices and street signs
  • Communicating with supervisor, City employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems
  • Operating one or more of the following: knuckle boon, sweeper, bucket truck, motor graders, scraper, excavator, compactor, front-end loader, track hoe, backhoe, tractor/trailer and lowboy, milling machine, paving machine, boring machine, jack hammer, dump truck, mowers, snow plow/salt spreader, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions
  • Operating a personal computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, design, spreadsheet, database, or other system software

Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:

  • Ability to determine, calculate, tabulate, or summarize data/information
  • Ability to perform subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations
  • Ability to act as lead person or crew leader, providing guidance to a work unit, coordinating activities, and reviewing work of the unit
  • Ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and/or rapid adjustments
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference data and information
  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
  • Ability to carry out detailed but routine written or oral instructions
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change

Minimum qualification:

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by three (3) years of experience in street and/or facility maintenance, grounds keeping or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) including appropriate endorsements. Must possess and maintain the following certifications:
Flagging, CPR, OSHA and Storm water. May be required to obtain and maintain other certifications and licenses depending on area of assignment.

Physical Requirements:

This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as medium work involving lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. If someone can do medium work, we determine that he or she can also do sedentary and light work. Sensory Requirements:
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental Factors:
Essential functions are regularly performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
