HES‑Custodian

Classified Position – 7609, 2026‑2027 school year, Category 4 per Salary Schedule, 240 days per year.

Reports to:

School Principal.

Scope of Responsibilities

Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility to maintain buildings, locker rooms, and adjacent grounds in a clean, orderly, and secure condition.

Representative Duties / Essential Functions
  • Sweep, scrub, mop, wax, and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops, and other assigned areas; spot‑clean and shampoo carpets; glue and stretch carpets as needed.
  • Clean classrooms, restrooms, showers, locker rooms, shops, cafeteria, offices, and gymnasium floors; promptly mop spills and remove gum and debris; monitor gym events to maintain orderly behavior and protect the building.
  • Clean and disinfect drinking fountains, sinks, toilets, showers, urinals, mirrors, tiles, windows, and chalkboards; empty pencil sharpeners and cleaning trays.
  • Report safety, sanitary, and fire hazards; recommend maintenance repairs; maintain building security; notify authorities of suspicious individuals and rule infractions.
  • Wash windows and walls; dust, polish furniture and woodwork; perform minor non‑technical repairs as needed.
  • Lock and unlock doors and gates; operate alarm system per schedule; maintain security of assigned areas.
  • Order supplies following established guidelines and procedures.
  • Collect, rake, and dispose of paper, trash, and debris around school grounds; clean walkways and entrances; wash trash cans; follow sanitation procedures.
  • Pack, unpack, load, receive, and store books, supplies, and materials.
  • Operate cleaning equipment (vacuum, floor stripper, buffer, polisher, carpet shampooer, scrubbers, high‑pressure sprayer, sweepers, blower).
  • Shovel, plow, and sand walkways and steps as directed.
  • Respond to emergency cleanups such as spills; maintain records of maintenance, repair needs, and safety issues.
  • Participate in major summer cleaning projects.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance; adhere to professional code of ethics; utilize technology appropriately; perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Basic methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in custodial work and routine maintenance.
  • Proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Proper lifting techniques.

Ability to:

  • Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or facility.
  • Use cleaning materials, equipment, and methods according to predetermined standards.
  • Learn and apply knowledge of schedules, procedures, and equipment use.
  • Learn appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in clean, working order; secure them properly.
  • Perform minor non‑technical repairs; observe and report maintenance needs.
  • Perform heavy physical labor; follow oral and written directions.
  • Meet schedules and timelines.
  • Communicate effectively with others, orally and in writing.
  • Inspect and assure facility security during assigned shifts.
  • Walk, bend, lift, push, and stand for extended periods of time.
Physical Demands
  • Seldom/Rare:
    Lift/carry over 100 lbs.
  • Occasional (up to 1/3 of work day):
    Sitting, kneeling/crawling, climbing/balancing.
  • Frequent (1/3 to 2/3 of work day):
    Reach/push/pull, bend/stoop/crouch, lift/carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Repetitive (2/3 or more of work day):
    Standing/walking, handling/feeling, lift/carry up to 10 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Any combination equivalent to high‑school diploma, G.E.D. Certificate, or demonstrated progress toward obtaining a G.E.D. as required by Kentucky law.
