Custodian Office​/On-site

Position Overview

Custodian at Harvard H. Ellis Technical High School, located in Danielson (Killingly), CT.

Full‑time, 37.5 hours per week, second shift Monday–Friday 2:00 pm – 10:00 pm (first shift during summer break).

• Perform custodial tasks and maintenance of school areas such as dormitories, classrooms, offices, auditoriums, wings, kitchens, dining rooms and lavatories, including outdoor areas.
• Dust, mop, sweep, scrub, strip, wax, and polish floors using appropriate equipment such as floor polishers and buffers.
• Wash, dust and polish glass, windows, woodwork, walls, furniture and metal equipment.
• Make beds & manage linens, blankets, and clothing within individual work areas.
• Collect and count soiled laundry; distribute, empty, and sterilize glassware, wash basins and bedpans.
• Sweep walkways, collect and dispose of trash.
• Report needs for repairs & perform minor maintenance.
• Run errands & inspect buildings for damage, reporting conditions to supervisor.
• Change light bulbs, replace fuses, lubricate or tighten door hinges, drawers, cabinets, etc.
• Replace ceiling or floor tiles; remove snow and ice from stairways and walkways, sand and salt stairways and walkways.
• Move furniture and set up classrooms.
• Perform related duties as required.

• Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Operate and care for tools and equipment; perform minor maintenance.
• Keep accurate records.

Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

• Experience performing custodial work in a school.
• Experience waxing and polishing floors using floor polishers and buffers.
• Experience moving furniture in a school and setting up classrooms.
• Experience removing snow and ice from stairways and walkways around large buildings.
• Experience with deep cleaning and disinfecting large facilities.

Incumbents must have adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity to perform the duties. A physical examination may be required.

Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or individuals.
