Buildings/Grounds Superintendent

Introduction:
The Wisconsin Veterans Home (WVHK) in King is seeking a Buildings/Grounds Superintendent to serve as the Facilities Maintenance Director. The 24/7 skilled nursing long‑term care facility is located on the shoreline of the Chain O’Lakes, off Highway 10 between Stevens Point and Appleton. This role leads maintenance operations serving elderly or disabled veterans and their spouses.

Position Summary

Under supervision of the Veterans Home Commandant, this position plans, coordinates, and oversees buildings and grounds maintenance, repair, and improvement on the WVHK campus. Responsibilities include supervising skilled and semi‑skilled staff in construction, electrical systems, communications and alarm systems, elevators, durable medical equipment maintenance, vehicle maintenance, and four‑season grounds maintenance; providing maintenance support across functional lines; assisting with weekend and evening call‑in rotations;

and supporting campus events and improvement initiatives. The incumbent also coordinates building maintenance projects with campus staff, contractors, and building management, manages the work order system, assigns work to maintenance staff, and ensures timely completion of tasks and a safe environment in compliance with building and Life Safety codes.

Salary

Starting salary will be between $84,489 and $90,480 per year, depending on qualifications. The position is in pay schedule‑pay range 81‑03.

Work Schedule

The base schedule is 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, but hours may be adjusted or increased to meet facility needs. The position requires on‑site work; remote work is not available.

Job Duties &

Physical Requirements

Lifting: up to 75 pounds;
Carrying: up to 50 pounds;
Body Positioning: bending, squatting, stooping, crawling;
Confined Spaces: entrance and work;
Stairs & Ladders: climbing. Exposure to physical and chemical hazards may occur.

Background Checks & Certifications

Criminal background check and pre‑employment tuberculosis (TB) skin test are required. A 12‑month probationary period may be required.

Qualifications Minimum qualifications
  • Experience planning and performing facilities & grounds maintenance (construction, electrical, grounds, automotive, interior, exterior, repair, lawn, garden, roads, sidewalks, etc.)
  • Experience supervising and/or mentoring staff (developing performance standards, evaluating training needs, handling discipline, interviewing, hiring, motivating staff)
Preferred qualifications
  • Experience planning and performing all‑seasons grounds maintenance
  • Experience communicating in a professional setting
