Located just outside of Seattle, WA, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) was founded in 1949 and is the only public institute of technology in the state of Washington. LWTech serves the Eastside and is located within the city of Kirkland on the eastern shore of Lake Washington. The college offers 12 bachelor’s degrees, 42 associate degrees and 70 professional certificates in 41 areas of study, including STEM‑focused programs.

Summary

of Responsibilities

Under general supervision, perform a blended custodial and facilities systems support role. Provide a range of custodial and groundskeeping services to maintain cleanliness and care of college facilities and grounds, events and programs. Engage with maintenance systems, data management, and preventive/predictive maintenance activities to support the college’s transition toward data‑driven facilities operations.

Custodial Functions
  • Perform cleaning, sanitizing, and custodial maintenance of campus spaces.
  • Maintain restrooms, classrooms, labs, and public areas.
  • Operate and maintain custodial equipment.
  • Support event setups and campus readiness.
  • Ensure safe and compliant chemical use and storage.
  • Maintain exterior walkways and entrances.
  • Respond to snow or weather; inspect areas daily for icy conditions, remove snow and apply deicer as necessary.
Grounds Functions
  • Perform landscaping installation and maintenance; mow grass, rake leaves, sweep, weed, and edge gardens; manually or with equipment remove snow or debris from sidewalks, stairs, driveways, and entryways; apply deicer as needed; perform other routine campus grounds upkeep.
  • Operate, maintain and repair power equipment and hand tools such as lawn mowers, blowers, and snow removal equipment.
  • Maintain parts and equipment supplies, parts catalogs and grounds equipment maintenance records; use building control systems to manage irrigation and conservation efforts.
  • Instruct other employees and contracted service workers in routine custodial, grounds, or maintenance techniques.
  • Improve work methods, knowledge of equipment, supplies and safety through professional development training.
  • Follow written and verbal instructions regarding special projects and other requests; follow college policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Perform duties of custodian, groundskeeper, and utility worker.
  • Maintain regular and satisfactory attendance and punctuality.
  • Coordinate training and continuous improvement; collaborate with Facilities Manager and Director to improve workflows.
  • Promote a proactive, preventative maintenance culture.
Qualifications
  • Post‑high‑school education or relevant degree or certifications preferred.
  • 1 year of experience in custodial and/or grounds work preferred.
  • Excellent verbal, written and email communication skills.
  • Knowledge of cleaning and groundskeeping chemicals.
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management systems preferred.
  • Basic understanding of building systems, automation systems, or IoT devices.
  • Intermediate computer skills (Excel preferred for tracking/reporting).
  • Valid Washington state driver’s license.
  • Ability to bend and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Possession of a pesticide license or ability to obtain within 6 months.
Compensation & Work Schedule

This is a 40‑hour per week, union‑covered position. Salary is placed between Step 1 ($4,654) and Step 5 ($4,940) of the IUOE Bargaining Agreement; ongoing step advancement is defined by the agreement.
