The City of Chino Hills is recruiting for the position of Senior Maintenance Worker in the Streets Division of Public Works. The Senior Maintenance Worker provides technical and specialized assistance to the assigned supervisor and serves as a lead person on the maintenance crew, leading, overseeing, and participating in the maintenance and repair of a multitude of public works systems, including park systems, roads, wastewater, and landscape areas.

Responsibilities
  • Confidently operate various equipment and tools as necessary for assignment.
  • Provide direction and training to a crew in using tools, equipment, and safety precautions.
  • Establish and maintain positive and collaborative working relationships with City staff, contractors, and the public.
  • Read, interpret and apply technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints and schematics or verbal direction.
  • Work day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts as required; respond to emergency calls and take appropriate action as needed.
  • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Respond to inquiries, complaints and requests courteously.
  • Utilize a computer to maintain accurate logs and records of work performed; prepare appropriate reports and documentation.
  • Recognize unusual, inefficient, or dangerous operating conditions and recommend appropriate correction.
Essential Duties
  • Lead a maintenance crew in the safe performance of all division duties; act as a technical resource on complex projects.
  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment such as rollers, dump trucks, skip loaders, jackhammers, air compressors, paint stripers and tractors.
  • Remove, replace and repair hazards in streets, such as potholes and cracks.
  • Break up, repair, mix, form and finish concrete curbs, gutters, sidewalks and ramps.
  • Place traffic control and warning signs; serve as a flag person to control traffic; set up cones, barricades and other safety zone methods as needed.
  • Load, transport and unload stone, gravel, asphalt, slurry materials, dirt and a variety of other materials.
  • Construct and repair manholes.
  • Maintain and install street and traffic signs.
  • Clear storm drains, catch basins and culverts.
  • Paint parking stalls, crosswalks, curbs, street lines and street markings.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
  • Experience Requirement: Minimum of three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in maintenance and repair in the assigned division, with experience in a lead or supervisory role highly desired.
  • Education Requirement: High School diploma or equivalent; preferred formal or informal education or training ensuring ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance; supervisory or public works coursework preferred.
  • License: Possession of a valid California Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements is required throughout employment;
    California Class A License highly desired.
Additional Position Details
  • Eligible for On-Call and Call-Back pay depending on assignment needs.
  • Eligible for Commercial Driver's License pay.
  • 9/80 Work Schedule.
Working Conditions

Work involves shifting between day, evening, weekend, and holiday shifts, with the potential for emergency response. On-call and Call-Back responsibilities may apply depending on assignment needs.

Important Information
  • Prospective employees must successfully complete a medical examination and background check, which are paid for by the City. The background check includes Live Scan fingerprinting through the Department of Justice.
  • All original appointments who have never held active status in this classification will be required to serve a 26-pay period probationary period (approximately one year).
  • Current employees who have held active status and are selected will be considered for a promotional appointment and will be required to serve a 13-pay period probationary period (approximately six months).
