Position: Fleet Technician I

The Fleet Technician I is responsible for performing routine maintenance, inspections, and minor repairs on the county’s fleet of vehicles and equipment. This entry-level position supports the safe and efficient operation of county vehicles, ensuring they meet operational and safety standards. Work is performed under close supervision with increasing independence as skills and knowledge are gained.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Perform basic maintenance on county vehicles and equipment, including oil changes, mount and balance tires, tire rotations, filter replacements, fluid checks, and battery inspections.
  • Assist senior technicians in diagnosing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues.
  • Conduct safety inspections and document findings in compliance with county and state regulations.
  • Maintain accurate service and repair records using the county’s fleet management system.
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with safety protocols.
  • Assist with inventory control of parts, tools, and equipment.
  • Support emergency repair needs during inclement weather events or county emergencies.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCES
  • High School diploma or GED
  • 1-2 years’ experience preferred
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must supply own hand tools

  • Able to maintain good teamwork and collaboration
  • Knowledge of basic hand and air tools
  • Ability to use hydraulic jacks and air jacks
  • Ability to operate a tire changer/balancer and brake lathe
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the Fleet Technician I job. While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to be able to lift at least 45 pounds. He/She must be able to stand and squat for extended periods of time. He/She must be able to stand, sit, squat, bend and reach over his/ her head. Other physical demands include but are not limited to.

  • Climbing and balancing on equipment, step stools, and ladders
  • Standing or squatting
  • Able to lift a minimum of 45 lbs
  • Lifting and carrying equipment
  • Bending, twisting, pushing, and pulling while working on equipment
WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing required duties of a Fleet Technician I the employee can be exposed to moderate noise levels. Duties can be performed in the shop, at other locations assigned by the shop supervisor or Fleet Technician IV including outdoor areas. Environmental factors include extreme weather conditions re are also times that a technician could be exposed to respiratory hazards including fumes from gases, chemicals, dust, and dirt.

The Walker County Fleet includes automobiles, light trucks, agricultural mowers and tractors, emergency vehicles, medium to heavy duty trucks and equipment. Exposure to dangerous machinery. PPE should be worn as needed.
